Fairplay Fouled, Yet Bonaduce Acquitted in Beatdown

Jonny Fairplay jumps on Danny Bonaduce during the Reality Awards by Kevin Winter/Fox

Survivor alum Jonny Fairplay has filed a police report claiming that his teeth were knocked out during an onstage tussle with Danny Partridge-Bonaduce at Wednesday's Fox Reality Channel Awards. In video captured by TMZ.com (and viewable here), Bonaduce approached Fairplay, who was in the midst of presenting, to say that the crowd was booing because of him. Fairplay then leapt up on Bonaduce and started "hugging" (read: monkey-humping) him. Danny then flipped Jonny face-first onto the floor. In an interview with TMZ, Fairplay claims he then required two and a half hours in dental surgery.Know what's really bizarre here? There's a Fox Reality Channel Awards show.UPDATE: According to papers filed by the Los Angeles district attorney and obtained by People, there is not enough evidence to charge Bonaduce with battery: "It did not appear that the suspect intentionally tried to cause injuries, but simply reacted to the victim's actions." read more

Things Heat up in Dave's Inferno

The contestants get down and dirty. Survivor by Monty Brinton/CBS

Episode Recap: "My Mom Is Going to Kill Me!"Remember those days when the pace sometimes dragged during the first few weeks of Survivor? You didn't know who was who and you could barely remember the first person to go and the challenges were a blur? Well, honey, this is not your grandma's Survivor! The game has not reinvented itself, but there is some sort of new energy that has Survivor: China cooking! It is only week two for the viewers yet there is so much going on.I applaud the competitors for not jumping into things too quickly. These folks are feeling each other out and then making their play. Now, whether that play involves some anachronistic strategy (Jean-Robert) or the tried-and-true Richard Hatch alliance method it's good to see that the players are thinking. Of course I can't say that across the board (Leslie), but I'll remark on that later. It's the poker player's strategy that concerns me the most. In theory, I get the whole lower-their-expectations plan, but anyon... read more

Survivor: China Exclusive: Meet the Zhan Hu Tribe

The Zhan Hu tribe, Survivor: China

The heat and humidity are "indescribable." The snakes are deadly. And China is one of Survivor's most difficult locations ever. Despite all that, host Jeff Probst — speaking by phone from the rugged camp near the vast man-made Zhelin Lake in eastern China — admits he'd like to stay longer. "Usually I want to go home," he says. "But if somebody said, ‘You have to stay another two weeks,' I'd say, ‘All right.'" The CBS show, which has been granted unprecedented access to some of China's greatest sites, including the read more

House Builds Up and Cuts Down New Team

Hugh Laurie by Andrew Macpherson/Fox

Outwit, outplay, out-House. That could be the slogan for the third season of Fox’s medical drama. “At the end of last season, House was alone without a team,” says executive producer Katie Jacobs. “[This year], he’ll struggle to decide if he needs a team. He’ll call in more [doctors] than he can use and whittle them down over the weeks in a very Survivor-like fashion.” But expect some of the “contestants” to be left standing. “We’ll have new cast members,” assures Jacobs. “We’re going to have a lot of fun with it.” Let the games begin. —Reporting by Nadine Mendoza read more

Emmy Nominations: The Snubs! The Strange-but-true!

Connie Britton and Kyler Chandler in Friday Night Lights by Virginia Sherwood/NBC Photo

There's no doubt about it: Looking at this year's Emmy nominations, voters really dropped the ball with Friday Night Lights, most inexcusably leaving the acclaimed newbie out of the drama-series race and robbing Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton of acting bids. "It’s incredibly rare for first-year shows to get nominated," NBC Universal Media Studios president Katherine Pope tells Variety. "I feel confident we'll get a best-drama nomination next year." Other oversights getting repeat mention across the biz are Lost (MIA from the drama race for a second straight year, yet this time unforgivably) and Michael C. Hall (whose Dexter apparently slays everyone but stodgy Academy members). That said, here are some Emmy nod "curiosities" I have culled from assorted trade-mag recaps and blogs. Enjoy:• As NBCU's Pope alluded to above, last year no new program earned a spot in the comedy- or drama-series contests. One rule tweak later, we have Heroes, 30 Rock and Ugly Betty.• Ameri... read more

Eviction 2

It seemed like tonight’s eviction vote could go either way — it was an excellent matchup. From the start I found Joe annoying and manipulative, but he had a good sense of humor and his cattiness was, if nothing else, entertaining. Meanwhile, in my mind, Evil Dick (is it Evel or Evil?) was the more obvious choice for eviction since he is ill-mannered, prone to vulgarity and an obvious source of tension for Daniele, who seems very well liked and respected in the house. Also, he is one of those people that just go for the low blow every time. But I don’t think anyone believes that she is going to make it to the final two, whereas Joe could have been a serious contender, given his ability to lie. So out the door he went. I think it is interesting that of the three people who were part of the original 11 and got shell-shocked by this season’s “twist,” only one remains. I think it shows that those three were at a distinct disadvantage because their game was... read more

Wrestling Diva to Grapple with Survivor?

Ashley Massaro by Rich Freeda/WWE

ProWrestling.com and other such message boards are abuzz with talk that WWE diva Ashley Massaro (Google when the boss is at lunch) is being "written out" of "story lines" because she will be a contestant on CBS' Survivor, presumably the upcoming China-based edition. Then again, maybe this is all a bad game of "telephone" and Ash is merely visiting Chyna. We may never know. UPDATE: A Survivor rep says the China cast will not be unveiled until at least mid-August. read more

CBS: We've Got Ratings, Now We Want Buzz!

It isn't enough for CBS to be the most-watched network. At the presentation of its new fall schedule, network execs announced they want their shows to be talked about, too. It's a new version of an old tune. For years, CBS has had the largest number of viewers, but many of them were old and not as desirable to advertisers. Recently, the network has gotten much more competitive for the 18-to-49-year-old crowd that Madison Avenue pays most for. Yet shows such as ABC's Ugly Betty get a lot more ink and watercooler chatter than the higher-rated Two and a Half Men or Survivor (CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler drove the point home to the audience at Carnegie Hall by citing how Betty's ratings have dropped 40 percent since its premiere). With a solid foundation of dependable hits, Tassler says this is the year she can afford to take a few programming risks to improve her share of buzz. Even if CBS' new shows fail, its regular program lineup will deliver ratings close to what it did t... read more

Premise: The show that launched a cultural (and ratings) phenomenon, and still arguably the class of the reality genre, what executive producer Mark Burnett prefers to call 'nonscripted drama.' It began with 16 people marooned on an island, working together to survive, but ultimately trying to 'outwit, outlast, outplay' the others for a $1 million grand prize. The group is whittled down as players are 'voted off' until only one remains.
