The Game and Other Wednesday TV

As we're reminded most recently by Gracepoint, Fox's so-so remake of the brilliant mystery series Broadchurch (shown here on BBC America), the British seem to have a knack for executing certain genres with more sophisticated aplomb. Special Report: The Dangerous Side of Survival TV

On the wall of a tiny wood cabin outside Prescott, Arizona, hangs a large poster of Cody Lundin staring intensely with a thin half-smile. Below him is a quote: "Learn survival skills from an expert." Lundin was one of the stars of the Discovery Channel series Dual Survival for three and a half of the show's first four seasons, until he departed abruptly late last year. He has been a survival instructor, running his Aboriginal Living Skills School, since the early '90s. This cabin is ostensibly the school's store, though there's little for sale beyond... read more

(It's also about time ABC scheduled a smart family comedy after its multiple-Emmy-winning champ Modern Family.)

Premise: The show that launched a cultural (and ratings) phenomenon, and still arguably the class of the reality genre, what executive producer Mark Burnett prefers to call 'nonscripted drama.' It began with 16 people marooned on an island, working together to survive, but ultimately trying to 'outwit, outlast, outplay' the others for a $1 million grand prize. The group is whittled down as players are 'voted off' until only one remains.
