The 12th edition of the reality series strands 16 people on various Panamanian islands to vie for the $1-million grand prize. At least one castaway per episode is banished to a separate island to live alone. While that isn't desirable, it does offer one advantage: on `Exile Island' there is a hidden immunity idol that, if found, can save a person from being voted out at tribal council. Players include a retired astronaut (Dan Barry), an author (Austin Carty) and a singer (Melinda Hyder).
  • December 14, 2006: The True Puppet Master | TV Show Recaps | 12/15/2006
For some reason I really thought Parvati would end up in the finals. Not due to any true game play on her part, but merely out of some cosmic irony. Rarely have I seen a castaway who has done as little as she. I was wrong. Even with the seismic tremors at Aitu — Becky and Sundra maneuvering to oust Ozzy — the easily influenced Yul pulled his strings and chose Adam as the Raro member most worthy of staying. As much as Yul denies it, he is the top dog on the island, and he wears the... read more
  • December 7, 2006: Everybody Hates Jonathan | TV Show Recaps | 12/8/2006
And now we know why Parvati doesn't do any work at camp. It's just not safe. The girl nearly sliced her thumb off trying to open a coconut. Tragic as that may have been, Parvati's mishap allowed us another glimpse of that cute Aussie doctor from last season. Her sacrifice will not go unnoticed in my book. This week was the family visits. Sundra's heartfelt weeping at the sight of her mother had me wondering if she'd be able to actually perform in the reward challenge of throwing water from one... read more
  • November 30, 2006: King Rat | TV Show Recaps | 12/1/2006
This show is so good I am almost moved to write poetry, and yet there are no words to express how much I'm enjoying Survivor: Cook Islands. Alas, I will attempt to recap the happenings at the Aitutonga tribe. In the aftermath of Nate's departure, Parvati was outspoken about her disappointment in Jonathan. She was so upset with him that she could vomit on his face. Now, she's billed as a boxer. Would a right cross not suffice? Parvati did make me laugh — when Jonathan flat-out told her... read more
  • November 23, 2006: "If I Flip Again..." | TV Show Recaps | 11/24/2006
I hate to say I told you so…but Nate perhaps you should have worn your glasses to tribal because you should have seen your ouster coming. Though it is clear from your parting words – Jonathan you can kiss my ass. You're a dirty, stanky, whack, fruitcake who sold me out, who sold out our tribe when we brought you in. You trading bastard. So kiss my ass Jonathan – that you were somewhat surprised and upset. On the other hand I don't know if anything could have saved Nate. His... read more
  • November 16, 2006: Four Straight Wins | TV Show Recaps | 11/17/2006
I love, love, love this show! It has excitement; it has conflict; it has betrayal; it has underdogs; it even has new verbs. Where else would you hear about octopussing? And Rebecca, if you chose only to speak one word during this week's show, I'm glad it was that one. Let's see, it is day 22, and over the course of the next three days Aitu pulled out another two challenge wins — making it a four-challenge sweep since the infamous mutiny. I'm so pleased for this underdog team, and who says... read more
  • November 9, 2006: And Then There Were Four | TV Show Recaps | 11/10/2006
Well, well, well. The show is getting interesting again. The Mutiny on the Bounty theme added a much-needed jolt to the Cook Islands Survivor. Jeff tossed out this new twist just before the reward challenge and, through the magic of editing, just after Jonathan and Candice chatted about breaking up their alliance of six. The offer? Mutiny. With ten seconds to decide, castaways could switch tribes. The only takers? Candice and Jonathan — thus leaving Aitu shorthanded with only four members... read more
  • September 28, 2006: Survivors, Ready? | TV Show Recaps | 9/29/2006
Survivor aficionados know there's a certain lingo that goes along with the show. For some it's comforting, for others, mind-numbingly repetitive. Me? I like it. Jeff's catchphrases are a constant that I can rely on each week as the number of castaways dwindles. That said...First things first: We couldn't move on from last week's show without finishing up Billy's love story. Back at camp, Aitu continued to dismiss the love, and the next day, after the tribes merged, Cecilia went directly to... read more
  • September 21, 2006: "Aitu Takes a Holiday" | TV Show Recaps | 9/22/2006
Hands down, this was the funniest tribal council ever on Survivor. It was like watching group therapy. Between Billy and "Mr. Bully's" fight, and Billy's declaration of love for Candace, I'm not sure what I laughed at more. It was tears-in-my-eyes laughter. I'll make a declaration of my own: I love Jeff Probst. He is the best reality-show host out there, with Phil Keoghan of The Amazing Race a close second. While everyone else was laughing and/or rolling their eyes at Billy, Jeff managed to... read more
  • September 14, 2006: Survivor Confidential | TV Show Recaps | 9/15/2006
I don't know if you've heard, but there's been some talk about this season of Survivor. Something about its being controversial. Set in the South Pacific's Cook Islands, this season's castaways have been divided into four tribes based on ethnicity and race ? black, white, Asian and Latino. Some think this is an outrageous stunt, an obvious ploy to raise the show's dwindling ratings. However, host Jeff Probst has been vocal about classifying the show as a "social experiment." So with lab coat... read more

Aras Baskauskas walked away with the million-dollar prize on CBS' Survivor: Panama — Exile Island, but he faced some fierce competition as the field narrowed to the final four. Baskauskas faced off against consummate strategist Danielle DiLorenzo, who earned her spot in the final two after competing against Cirie Fields in a tie-breaker challenge. Cirie and fellow fan favorite Terry Deitz ultimately placed fourth and third, respectively, and while they didn't take home the... read more
  • Yoga Guru Keeps His Cool to Win Survivor | Today's News: Our Take | 5/16/2006
Aras Baskauskas may have butted heads with his Casaya tribe mates early on, but his athletic prowess and true competitive nature helped him survive 39 days in Panama by outwitting, outplaying and outlasting 15 other castaways to walk away as the sole Survivor. The 24-year-old Santa Monica-based yoga instructor was awarded the ultimate prize Sunday night as CBS' Survivor: Panama---Exile Island concluded its 16-week run. TVGuide.com sat down with the newly minted — albeit exhausted — millionaire... read more
  • Survivor's Shane Smoked by Betrayal | Today's News: Our Take | 5/11/2006
Every reality show has a contestant fans love to hate, and for CBS' Survivor: Panama — Exile Island (tonight at 8 pm/ET), Shane Powers willingly accepts the title. As he provided a wealth of comic relief for castaways and viewers alike, the Los Angelino took Survivor fans on an emotional roller coaster as he struggled with a severe nicotine addiction and dealt with the anxiety of being away from his son. TVGuide.com sat down with Shane the day after his elimination to chat about... read more
  • Fire Dancer Burned by Survivor Alliance | Today's News: Our Take | 5/4/2006
Falling victim to her tribe mates' harsh personal feelings about her, Courtney Marit was the 11th person to pack her bags and say goodbye on CBS' Survivor: Panama—Exile Island (Thursdays at 8 pm/ET). Saying that the vote to oust her was "shocking," the California-based performer realized that her status as a potential threat going into the final two resulted in the decision to send her home. TVGuide.com grilled the former Casaya member about her finale voting strategy, her on-screen... read more
  • Bruce Is a True Survivor! | Today's News: Our Take | 4/27/2006
On last week's episode of CBS' Survivor: Panama—Exile Island (Thursdays at 8 pm/ET), Bruce Kanegai had to be taken off the island for emergency care. Though he survived a machete wound to the face earlier in the season, he was done in by severe constipation that was nearly life-threatening. The jury is still out on whether he'll return to Survivor's jury — the self-dubbed "Mr. Miyagi" is keeping mum, though we may find out on tonight's episode — but the sweet 58-year-old was happy to... read more
  • Survivor: Panama's Secrets Revealed! | Today's News: Our Take | 4/26/2006
Are the exiled really alone on CBS' Survivor: Panama — Exile Island? And how much does host Jeff Probst know before tribal council? TV Guide scavenges for the answers to those questions and more, unearthing along the way an immunity-idol twist that you did not see coming. A big deal was made in the promotion of the banishment to Exile Island as this season's new twist. Why do they show so little of what happens there?"The notion of Exile Island was to remove someone socially as well... read more
  • "Survivor Sal" Needs a New Nickname | Today's News: Our Take | 4/20/2006
Sally Schumann tried out for four prior editions of Survivor before earning a spot on CBS' Survivor: Panama — Exile Island (Thursdays at 8pm/ET). Sure enough, her study of the series worked to her advantage. Having outlasted all of the La Mina women and leaving Terry to fend for himself against the six remaining Casayas, Schumann now serves as the second member of the jury that will crown the ultimate champ. TVGuide.com sat down with "Survivor Sal" the day after her elimination to get her... read more
  • Austin Powerless to Elude Survivor Exit | Today's News: Our Take | 4/13/2006

TVGuide.com chatted with Austin — who earned the first seat on this season's jury — the day after his snuffing to find out how he managed to survive Exile Island, his voting strategy for the finale and his reality-star crush.... read more
  • Survivor: Panama — Exile Island... | Today's News: Our Take | 3/31/2006
Survivor: Panama — Exile Island Merge time finally arrived, with some mad scrambling, extremely arrogant behavior and highly cheesy lines delivered by Austin. "Marvin Gaye said it best: Let's get it on" and "Bobbing and weaving like Sugar Ray Leonard" were the gems that aired, but I have a feeling he uttered, "It's on like Donkey Kong" at some point, too. Terry unsuccessfully managed the futile task of building numbers but unsurprisingly now holds both tokens of immunity. Bruce painted a pretty... read more
  • Astronaut Blasted Off Survivor | Today's News: Our Take | 3/16/2006
Retired rocket man Dan Barry spends his days building robots but found himself struggling to put together a much simpler puzzle on last week's Survivor: Panama—Exile Island. As a result, the 52-year-old father of two found himself packing his bags after copping to his poor performance on the immunity challenge, thus diluting La Mina down to three members going into the tribal merge. TVGuide.com spoke with the space man about how his NASA excursions affected his island outlook, who he's rooting... read more
  • Survivor: Panama — Exile Island... | Today's News: Our Take | 3/16/2006
Survivor: Panama — Exile IslandAs we head into March Madness and lose Survivor for two weeks, it's time for a little "unseen footage" or what some might call "filler." Since it wasn't even a real episode, I figured we'd see the real show open with all of the contestants, but no such luck. The repeated viewing of Tina crying over her son was just as sad as the first time, and the clips from different episodes truly show how crazy Shane has been. But the new footage was the real reason to... read more
