Survivor: Nicaragua Episode Recap: "Running the Camp" Season 21, Episode 9

Even as the former La Flor and Espada tribes merge into one, two distinct factions are illuminated this week as Marty continues his attack against Jane while power-players Sash and Brenda ponder their next move. Upon returning to camp from Tribal Council, Marty stands by everything he said about Jane: If she makes the final three, she's a guaranteed million-dollar winner. The Marty camp — including Fabio, Dan and Benry — have a plan to blindside Jane by telling the camp they're voting for NaOnka, thereby flushing out her hidden immunity idol and sending Jane packing. Jane, however, has a team of her own in Chase, Purple Kelly, NaOnka and Holly, with Sash and Brenda as the swing votes. Brenda admits that her relationship with Chase has drifted over the past few weeks, and because he's such a worrywart, she's unsure if she can trust him in an alliance.

But before any voting can begin, Libertad must compete in two challenges this week. The reward challenge features and elaborate obstacle course where two teams must bust through walls of hay, sticks and bricks, grabbing three keys along the way to unlock a flag at the end of the course. After a random drawing, the teams end up as men vs. women, with extra-man Chase sitting out (but he did choose to support the women's team because of his alliance to them). The race was fairly even until the women reach the sticks and start bouncing off every obstacle instead of breaking through. The men are able to bust through all the obstacles — even with bum-knee Dan slowing them down a bit. In the end, the men claim victory and enjoy a zip-line adventure through the Nicaraguan rainforest canopy along with a barbeque. At the barbeque, the Jane blindside is reinforced, and Marty's strategizing seems to impress the young guys, all except Sash, who just listens in on the plan to report back to Brenda. Back at camp, the women are grateful for Chase's alliance and decide that Marty needs to go next — if he doesn't win individual immunity first.

At the immunity challenge, Probst presents the players with a series of symbols (ship, ship's wheel, musket, etc.) in a specific order that must be repeated back to him using a cube with the symbols. Memory must not be this group's strong point because after the first round, half the contestants are eliminated, with Dan showing Probst a symbol that wasn't even revealed in the first round. It comes down to Brenda and Marty, who knows he desperately needs this win to stay alive in the game. Brenda shows Probst her symbol while flashing a smile, and Marty gets confused and submits the wrong answer. Brenda wins individual immunity, which means both Marty's and Jane's plans are still safe to execute at Tribal Council, but it's just a matter of where Sash and Brenda will use their votes. Sash and Brenda seem to be getting too comfortable in this game, and the might need to tone down their "positions of power" talk in case the rest of the tribe starts to get weary about how much they're actually influencing this game.

Even with the plans in place, this group knows that with NaOnka at Tribal Council, all you can do is expect the unexpected. Marty comes out swinging at Jane again, but Probst wonders why NaOnka, who stole food and lied to the tribe, gets a pass at Tribal. Marty agrees and hints she might be going tonight, but that sets NaOnka off as she launches a string of profanities and personal insults directed at Marty, Fabio and practically anybody in her tribe that dares speak out against her. Even Probst is left speechless when she admits she hates everybody. Whether this is really NaOnka, as she claims, or just a strategy to be a controversial player that people will take to the end, it appears her antics are starting to affect her tribe mates. But once again, she's not one of this week's targets, as Marty's crew votes for Jane, but Jane's alliance — including Sash and Brenda — put Marty's name down, sending him to the jury.

What did you think about last night's episode? Are you happy to see Marty go, or should it have been NaOnka? And what, exactly, are Purple Kelly and Dan still doing out there?
