Supernatural Episode Recap: "Party on Garth" Season 7, Episode 18

Garth takes on a case he can't handle on his own. Not only does he need the help of the Winchester brothers, he also needs the aid of some beer, wine coolers, or whatever it takes to get drunk. That's the only way to see the thing that goes bump in the night in this tale. Garth, the clever (and quirky) hunter that he is, also figures out something else. There's something that's haunting Dean and Sam -- and he knows exactly who it is.

And before I get to the boozin' and the big bad tearing the guts out of its victims, there's a little matter of the end to discuss first. We knew Bobby was still a part of the boys. Ever since he died, unexplained instances (some may say little miracles) have been occurring and we knew it had to be his work. Now we have confirmation.

It took an outside presence (re: Garth) to force the boys into facing the possibility that Bobby's spirit was tied to the flask Dean has been drinking from and cherishing. Garth figured out his personal EMF wasn't broken after all. It turned out Dean's EMF was going off for another reason entirely: Bobby. Finding out this whole development in this episode was completely unexpected. Love that the show can still surprise us in its seventh season.

"Party on, Garth" started out gruesome. Once the Winchesters hooked up with their eccentric hunter friend, things moved into the humorous direction. Who knew the episode would also veer into the emotional? After Garth pushed the Bobby/Ghost connection, Sam revealed something interesting. When Dean's beer did a sudden disappearing act back in "Adventures in Babysitting," he tried to contact Bobby with a Ouija Board (although Sam called it a "talking board"). He didn't find anything. Ever since, all these mysterious things have been happening including what went down when Dean battled the shojo using a samurai sword consecrated with a shinto blessing. He momentarily lost the weapon. And then it came sliding right back to him. The evidence was growing:

"The blade was across the room and then it was in my hand. And then my beer drank itself. Oh, and then that page magically appeared on the bed. And -- then Bobby's book fell down and out popped the number of the guy who found Cas."

I get why Dean called out to Bobby in the brewery, he had to be feeling something. They're hunters, it's their job to suss out the supernatural. Sam's convinced this is all the normal grieving process. But he should know that they've never been normal or done things the normal way. I guess Sam needs more proof. Dean's almost there but needs a little bit more of a nudge considering he didn't see Bobby (in ghost form) standing right there in their hotel room when he went back to retrieve Bobby's flask. How amazing was that? It seemed like Dean was looking straight at Bobby, when in reality he was just seeing where he left the flask. It had the makings of a truly emotional reunion. Instead, in the matter of a few seconds, we got Bobby calling the boys "idjits" for not seeing him. It was beyond great to see Jim Beaver back on the show. Can't wait to see more of him. We got Cas and Bobby appearances in the span of two weeks. They've been missed.

Other Thoughts/Favorite Moments

Kudos to the return of DJ Qualls. I'm kind of in love with Garth after this second appearance. I liked him in "Season Seven, Time for a Wedding," but he got to do so much more in this one. Where Sam and Dean can be straightforward about getting intel out of a witness, Garth tends to come up with more creative ways to get at the truth. Some favorite Garth moments as he hunted a shojo:

--Loved Garth chugging an entire beer. And then getting completely wasted off that one drink.

--His theme song is, apparently, Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison." There was one shot after he burned the big bad's bones and the song was playing and he was walking in slow-mo that was just hilarious.

--Garth uses a sock puppet to get through to a little girl. He calls it Mr. Fizzles and it comes complete with a high voice. It's beyond odd but it also totally works.

--He also gets at the truth of McCann's illegitimate son, which instantly put the guy in harm's way.

--Hugging Dean and Sam at the end of the episode. It's his thing.

Never in a million years would I have ever thought "Poison" would be played during an episode of Supernatural, but I'm glad that it was. By the way, best line from that song? "Never trust a big butt and a smile."

The deaths were appropriately gross and bloody. I felt bad for the little drunk girl who witnessed her mom's insides getting ripped out. I really appreciate that the monster of the week wasn't a demon or a Leviathan. That it actually looked like it was supernatural instead of simply looking human.

Sam understandably feels guilty for what he sees as passing on the crazy to Cas. It's clear it's a touchy subject they're going to have to get into in a later episode. Things don't sound good for Cas right now.

Could it have killed the show to let Sam and Dean's drunken scene at the brewery go on longer? I wanted more. It was just getting good when they were interrupted. Boo.

Sam did ask Dean if he could still get drunk. Does that mean Dean's still drinking? I know he has Bobby's flask and everything. But I thought he was on the wagon after the events of "The Slice Girls." I'm a little confused. He was clearly off the wagon in this episode. But, you know, it was all in the line of duty.

Loved a drunk Sam commandeering the cab to get to the brewery. And Dean recreating a running spring (during the blessing of the samurai sword) using a bottle of water. That was so very MacGyver of him.

Some Favorite Lines (courtesy of writer Adam Glass)

"You've been Garth'd."

"Gentlemen, this is Corporal Brown." "Corporal James Brown. I'm shipping off to the A.F. mina┼ła."

"Hey. Either of you ever heard of Thighslapper Ale?" "Is that a stripper or a beverage?" "Beverage for douchebags."

"So, he -- he let that thing out of the box and it must have just followed him...to the place with all the thingies." "Yes. Yes. That's smart. I'm actually kind of drunk. What is this? Me likey."

"I'm gonna take a run at her." "A what?"

"Cause Mr. Fizzles can sense when you're being a...LIAR."

"You sure you guys don't want to hang out? Grab some brunch. Maybe some brews?"

"I'm right here you idjit! Balls!"
