Supernatural Episode Recap: "We Need to Talk About Kevin" Season 8, Episode 1

Supernatural is back and so are the Winchesters. The action picks up a year after the events of the Season 7 finale. Dean is fresh out of Purgatory and, as a result, Sam has to dust off his hunter skills. After all, he hasn't worked the family business since Dean disappeared. On the immediate agenda: track down Kevin, the prophet of the Lord we met towards the end of last season, and get back to the business of being brothers. Easier said than done.

Don't mind me, I'm just typing here with a big smile on my face. It's a result of watching the Season 8 premiere "We Need to Talk about Kevin." I don't think I've felt this good about an episode of Supernatural in a long time. It was a great way for new showrunner, Jeremy Carver, to kick off a new season as well as a new era of the series (and on a new night to boot). Let's break it all down:

The State of Dean

The minute the oldest Winchester brother landed in Maine, you could tell there was something different about him. He was rough, raw, edgy and a bit animalistic. Things didn't really change once he was reunited with Sam. He was definitely having trouble readjusting to the world at large. As far as we know, he may have been the only human in Purgatory. Although, we did learn about a human portal (which is how he got out), so there must have been others at some point.

Anyway, Dean has to deal with being around other people again. Kids running around made him a tad skittish. Out there in Purgatory, he said things were pure. And even though he had to be on guard and constantly fight for his life, there was an enjoyment there. Gone is the depressed Dean who drank too much and lamented about all the ways his life sucked. I'm curious to learn more about the man we're going to get this season.

I don't know about you guys, but I loved that ritual Dean had to perform in order to release and resurrect Benny, a vampire he met in Purgatory. For me, there was a sense that these two had been to war together. I instantly felt a bond between the two "soldiers." This is a connection I never thought Dean would have. Yes, he could be BFFs with an angel; and, yes, he could occasionally tolerate the presence of a demon for a greater purpose; but becoming friends with a vampire is something I never thought he'd do. They've been through stuff. And they are hiding something big. I can't wait to find out what those secrets are. What did they have to resort to in Purgatory? How did Dean appreciate the place in a way Benny never did?

The State of Sam

You know what? I don't blame Sam for getting out of the life. The guy's been through everything including doing the Triple Lindy into hell as the meat suit for Lucifer. He then lost his soul. After he got it back, his noggin' went through another kind of hell when the wall came tumbling down. This guy needed a break. And a dog. And a girl. I'm glad he got it all.

I am going to wait and see how all these Sam flashbacks unfold because: 1. I do want to know why he didn't look for Dean at all. Sure, the brothers had a deal not to look for each other but neither of them had ever adhered to it. I feel like there may be a specific reason why he didn't look for his brother for a second and he didn't even check his cell phones. It was hard to listen to Kevin Tran's voicemail messages. He needed help and he didn't get it for the longest time.  2. The jury's out on Sam's girlfriend. I'm not seeing a connection yet but this is only the first episode. We haven't seen much. I can be patient.

It's going to take a while for the Sam to reconnect with his brother. They were a bit off in this episode but they were supposed to be. I definitely want to know more about how Sam fared during the year. Did he have a job like Dean did when he was with Lisa and Ben?

Kevin Tran

How badass was Kevin the Prophet in "We Need to Talk about Kevin?" I admit to developing a case of worship for him. It's interesting because I wasn't quite feeling him last season. But now, God is teaching him how to deal with demons. And, thanks to Crowley's kidnapping him and forcing him to read another tablet that was the Word of God, he realized the endgame here. That there is some sort of spell that will close the Gates of Hell forever, which means no more demons.

Kevin has been forced into this life so he has to deal with his possessed girlfriend, whom Crowley unceremoniously killed after Kevin escaped from his clutches yet again. He is now completely immersed in a life he never wanted. While Dean was very blunt with Kevin about this being his existence, I did love how Sam used the soft touch to make him see that he has to play along now. And if they are able to pull off the whole eliminating demons for all time thing, then he can get his normal life back.

Where's Cas?

Well, we didn't find out much of anything in the premiere but we do know that Dean was looking for him in Purgatory. Does that mean they were rarely together over there at all? I'm excited to figure out Cas' story and what went on with him in Purgatory. And where is he now? Dean seems to think he's gone. But Cas is never really gone, is he? Someone usually puts him back together again.

I thought the flashbacks fit well into the scope of the show. I'm actually looking forward to seeing what else happened in the year that Dean had been living in Purgatory and Sam had been living la vida normal. Benny intrigues me verily. And making Kevin a bigger part of the action was a good move. A more devious Crowley was a beautiful thing as well. His breaking the neck of Kevin's girlfriend was so horrifying. I'm encouraged and excited again and that's a good thing. I'm so happy this latest hellatus is over. I'll be watching this episode again.

Random Thoughts and Favorite Lines

-Wow to Sam's long flowing mane. I don't think his hair has ever been this long.

-Purgatory Dean is all bloody and dangerous and, well, hot.

-The action in the episode sure hit a bunch of states: Maine, Michigan, Louisiana, Iowa, Montana...

-Ty Olsson plays Benny, Dean's new buddy. Olsson once played a vampire on a season 2 episode of Supernatural ("Bloodlust'). He's also been in Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, Eureka and is in the final Twilight movie.

-Osric Chau is, of course, Kevin Tran. Look for him in a live action web series that helps promote the much-anticipated Halo 4 video game release. Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn comes out this week.

-A couple songs in the episode: The Road So Far was set to Jethro Tull's "Locomotive Breath" and there was also Styx's "Man in the Wilderness."

-How many episodes have moments devoted to figuring out whether Sam or Dean are a demon, a shifter or some other supernatural being?

-Dean: "Well, I guess standing too close to exploding Dick sends your ass straight to Purgatory."

-Dean: "Well, no visible signs of douchery, I'll give you that."

-Crowley: "Moose, still with the pork chops. I admire that."
