Is Ugly Betty Doomed?

Ugly Betty

Uh-oh! ABC announced Tuesday that it plans to move Ugly Betty to Fridays in the fall, wedged between wacky neighbors Supernanny and 20/20.

A move to Friday is often a show's last stop before cancellation, but ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson expressed confidence in Betty during his presentation of the network's fall schedule. "I love the show," he said. "I'd love to see it have a great run on Friday night, the way Ghost Whisperer has." He said he hopes that Betty will hold on to Supernanny's lead-in. What's taking Betty's place? Read on to find out...

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
8 pm/ET FOX
After a group hug and some chamomile tea, the Connors resolve their differences with Cameron and Derek, and the four set off for the Bahamas for some quality downtime. Just kidding — Sarah ditches the wisdom of "united we stand, divided we fall" and takes John to see old pal Charley Dixon while keeping Derek and Cameron out of the loop. Unfortunately, trust issues with John's uncle and the lady terminator are the least of Sarah's problems.

Tonight's episode finds Jo back in merry old England again, but things are not so cheery for a couple with four kids, all of whom are under the age of 10. This time, however, it's not just the kids who need disciplining: Jo will have to work her magic on a do-nothing dad who seems content to sit back and watch his wife do all the work, which puts a terrible strain on their marriage.

VIDEO: Look, Up in Our Studio, It's... Supernanny!

As the father of soon-to-be-6-year-old twin boys, I more than appreciate the work that Jo Frost does as TV's Supernanny. So it was my pleasure to pick Jo's brain and have her share the single biggest mistake that today's parents tend to make. (That useful nugget comes at the 2:00 mark.)

Jo also talks about last week's episode, in which she assisted a family that was largely deaf, and previews an upcoming job in which the parents go through a divorce while Supernanny is under their roof. "The children are caught in the middle of it all," Frost says of that unfortunate circumstance. "It was a challenging situation."

Jo also details the sorts of advice parents can find at her website (3:15) and in a book she wrote earlier this year.

"I'm really happy that [the Supernanny series] continues to be [successful]," she says. "Having now done four years working closely with American families, it gives me another chance to do more of that."

Ratings: Whisperer Makes Some Noise

Jennifer Love Hewitt in Ghost Whisperer

How Friday's fare... fared: 8 pm/ET Ghost Whisperer was the evening's most-watched program, delivering 9.3 million total viewers, a seven percent increase over its year-ago opener. 5th Grader (5.8 mil) was a distant second, followed by Wife Swap, Toughest Jobs and the CW's returning comedy combo of Everybody Hates Chris (2.09 mil) and The Game (1.91 mil). 9 pm This is where Moonlight fans will be tempted to say, "Told you so!" The Ex List topped the first half-hour with 7.2 mil (or 73 percent retention coming immediately out of GW), but then ceded the lead to Deal or No Deal during its back half, dropping to 6.49 mil. Moonlight, Les Moonves will scold me for reminding you, premiered a year ago to 8.63 mil and even mustered 7.56 mil in its May finale. That said, the luminous Ms. Reaser appears to have drawn slightly better demos. Elsewhere, Fox's Lyrics (4.35 mil) edged out ABC's Supernanny (4.19 mil). 10 pm Numbers' numbers were down a mil from its previous premiere, but it still came out on top with 8.13 mil. 20/20 followed with 6.34 mil, while NBC's Life (5.44 mil) was down 24 percent from its Monday premiere (the first of two "special" Monday airings). read more
