HBO Wins Big at Sports Emmys | TV Guide Sports Report | 4/30/2008
At Monday's Sports Emmys, HBO led all networks, taking eight trophies. Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel was honored along with its Ghosts of Flatbush documentary and the network's boxing coverage.ESPN scored seven total Emmys (including three for ESPN.com) and Fox picked up five Emmys. CBS and NBC won three statues apiece.It was a big night for NBC's football coverage. Sunday Night Football's Al Michaels won best play-by-play honors and his boothmate John Madden took top analyst honors. Football Night in America co-host Cris Collinsworth was named best studio analyst. James Brown won best studio host for CBS' The NFL Today.Other Emmys went to Fox's Fiesta Bowl coverage along with NASCAR on Fox. NFL Season Opens Sept. 4 with Giants and Redskins | TV Guide Sports Report | 3/31/2008
Gee, you think the NFL is trying to steal baseball's thunder? Today is MLB's opening day, but that didn't stop the NFL from announcing its prime-time schedule for Week 1. The season begins Thursday, Sept. 4, with Super Bowl champions the New York Giants hosting the Washington Redskins (7 pm/ET, NBC). The initial Sunday-night game will see the Chicago Bears visit the Indianapolis Colts (Sept. 7, 8:15 pm/ET, NBC), and Monday Night Football's season begins Sept. 8 on ESPN with a doubleheader: the Minnesota Vikings at the Green Bay Packers (7 pm/ET) and the Denver Broncos at the Oakland Raiders (10:15 pm/ET). read more

Sports News Briefs: NBC Flexes Its NFL Muscle | TV Guide Sports Report | 12/11/2007
NBC is taking advantage of its flexible scheduling clause with the NFL to move the Dec. 23 game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Washington Redskins to Sunday Night Football. The game was previously slated to air on Fox at 1 pm/ET, but given the Vikings' recent hot streak four straight wins NBC exercised its right to poach for prime-time....As expected, University of Florida sophomore Tim Tebow won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday, bringing ESPN a record audience for the event. The telecast drew 4.28 million viewers, a hefty 31 percent increase over last year's 2.95 million. read more

Sports News Briefs: Beckham Scores Down Under; Johnson Honored in NYC | TV Guide Sports Report | 11/27/2007
Sydney FC, an Australian soccer team partially owned by Without a Trace star Anthony LaPaglia, defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy in an exhibition in Sydney earlier today. David Beckham's presence helped attract 80,295 fans including LaPaglia to Telstra Stadium. Beckham scored one of his trademark bending free kicks, but it wasn't enough, as Sydney won, 5-3. According to Sydney FC's website, "a series of three Beckham [corner kicks] in four minutes looked like the Christmas illuminations as flashes went off repeatedly in the nearby crowd...."ESPN Classic will air the NASCAR Nextel Cup Awards live on Friday from the (very un-NASCAR-like) Waldorf-Astoria hotel in Manhattan (Nov. 30, 9 pm/ET). David Spade and Kelly Clarkson will perform and driver Jimmie Johnson will be honored for his second straight Nextel Cup title.
