Stylista Episode Recap: "Fashion Show 101" Season 1, Episode 8

Finally, the episode we've been waiting for: the contestants must produce a fashion show. Also, best guest judge ever alert: Zac Posen. One of today's sharpest, most influential designers will help determine which trendsetter isn't quite the right fit. Last week DyShaun finally got his wish: to his and Megan's delight, Kate was sent home. Let's see how everyone's coping ...

There are only four left now: Ashlie, Johanna, DyShaun, and Megan. Johanna expresses her frustration in getting interviews with no fashion experience (I feel your pain), and, low and behold, Johanna started a fashion blog. Smart girl. Megan has her doubts and claims to have been like her when she was 15, and tells her she's missing the "business" side of a job in the industry. Johanna seems to think that her work ethic will get her by.

For the apprentice task Malina tells the contestants to meet her ate Elite modeling agency. They will be casting a replacement model for designer Zac Posen. Ashlie claims he too is her favorite designer. Four identical dresses, one for each of the models, and whoever casts the model that Anne selects for the shoot wins the task. 30 models' beauty overwhelms Johanna. DyShaun is smart to consider the color of the dress and prefers a model with a darker complexion. Megan things the dress needs someone more voluptuous to complete the form of the dress. She's right. I despise Megan, but she's right. Johanna goes with the skinniest girl. Uh oh. Anne gives it to Megan, who obviously knew the best way to go about this, focusing on the body and height of the model.

Editorial challenge this week: create a new designer page to feature a "hot, new designer." From a sort of showcase the contestants will have to pick one designer to work with that is on trend; they must then show photos that best represent the collection, and convey who the designer is through the interview questions. Megan chooses the teams, and they are: Ashlie and DyShaun and Johanna and herself. DyShaun is a bit hurt that he is not chosen. Uh oh, trouble in Kate-hater land!

Apparently the contestants will also be introducing the new designer on the runway and ... producing their own runway show. So a runway show and a page? Johanna wanted her experience and now she's got it. The contestants talk to the designers and examine their collections. Megan happens to be wearing some of the designers' work and claims most of these "new designers" have been around for a while. It looks like the two pairs want the same designer: Jolibe. Now Jolibe will choose between the two sets of teams. The irony! And they go with Ashlie and Dyshaun. Megan's pitch was pretty weak. Second choice is Richard Ruiz. So that fashion show, it has to be done in 24 hours ...

Back at Elle Johanna tells a designer that she doesn't like one of his pieces and Megan has to pull her aside and tell her how to conduct business: this is his creative direction, not hers. Basically: shut it. And it appears as if Ashlie is taking pretty much all the shoes for some unknown reason. Sabotage! Seriously, all the shoes. But Megan is determined not to let it ruin her show. Johanna burns the midnight oil writing while Megan snores in bed.

The designers choose their makeup looks with the help of a Max Factor specialist---product placement time! Boudoir, Victorian sexy for Johanna and Megan; Ashlie and DyShaun want a thick brow and white, pursed lip. Anne arrives on a mini mini runway. I do love the Jolibe look, I have to say. Anne likes the choice of hair and makeup as well. However, the worst thing happens: a zipper breaks and there's a lull in the show. Anne knows there's a problem. Now for Megan and Johanna. Johanna really does seem clueless, and this time, like many others, she seems to be psyching herself out. The judges aren't big fans of the shoes chosen. Too bad they didn't have much of a choice!

Time to make the layouts. 90 minutes remain to look through the photos and put together a page. The teams seem to be splitting the work pretty evenly on both teams. It seems like Ashlie is also having problems editing again, and their page is looking more like a collage by the minute.

Time for judges table, and Zac Posen walks in like a rock star to help judge. Boy does he look good. Ashlie and DyShaun go first. Their layout looks crammed and a bit unprofessional. Anne loves the hair and makeup, but isn't as impressed with the choice of photos. Same old story: nothing pops off the page because there are too many images present. Zac concurs. And to top it off there are mistakes in the copy. Megan and Johanna are up highlighting the prints of Richard Ruiz and Anne seems to be pleased with the cohesion but Zac wants a close-up of the prints. These graphic designs are bangin! But the headline is a "mind game" according to Anne and the layout is a "snooze." So who's the winner? Megan and Johanna. Looks like editing skills will always get you by in this game, something that Ashlie just can't seem to remember. And for that reason she is simply not the right fit.
