Premise: The first host of `The Tonight Show' brought an inspired lunacy to a Sunday variety series that aired opposite `The Ed Sullivan Show' in the late '50s. Memorable bits included `Letters to the Editor' and `Man on the Street,' and the protean Allen had one of TV's all-time supporting companies with Don Knotts, Tom Poston, Louis Nye, Gabe Dell, Bill Dana and Pat Harrington Jr. Allen revived many of the same elements for two subsequent variety series, both called `The Steve Allen Comedy Hour.'
