I was thinking, with the new ...

Question: I was thinking, with the new season of Project Runway upon us, why have Runway and Top Chef been such big hits, while Bravo's other reality contest shows, Shear Genius and Step It Up & Dance, are such stinkers? Is it the production values, or the choice of hosts and judges? (For me, Elizabeth Berkeley made Step It Up & Dance unwatchable.) When the shows are on the same network and have such similar looks and formats, it's strange that some would be so good and others so bad. (And not in the "so bad it's good" way.) Answer: In the world of reality, as in all other forms of TV, overfamiliarity eventually breeds contempt. As Bravo keeps cloning shows off the Runway and Top Chef models, invariably there will be some duds in the mix. Happens all the time on any network that keeps churning out the same sort of show as if on an assembly line (see the CW). The real concern here is that overextending the brand could do some real harm by diluting the appeal of the original shows tha ... read more

Video Q&A: Up Close with Elizabeth Berkley

Put on your dancing shoes! Most of you probably know Elizabeth Berkley from Saved by the Bell, but the actress has been putting together a small-screen comeback of sorts with her role as Horatio's ex-wife on CSI: Miami and a hosting gig on Bravo's latest reality show Step It Up & Dance. We sat down with Berkley to chat about the current wealth of dance competitions on TV, how long she expects to hang around Miami and just how "close" Saved by the Bell's Jessie and Kelly's friendship would be in present day. read more

Elizabeth Berkley's CSI: Miami Stay Has Got Legs

If you thought H's hellion of an ex-lover was walking off into the sunset, think again. Elizabeth Berkley, while making the rounds to promote Bravo's Step It Up & Dance (premiering tonight at 11 pm/ET, before moving to 10 o'clock next week), let slip to that she in fact has "many more" CSI: Miami appearances ahead of her. Or, as she teased with a wicked grin, "Things are just getting started" when it comes to the havoc Julia Winston will wreak on her lawman ex. I'm getting the unsettling vibe that she may dare to tamper with his Ray-ban collection! Hussy. CSI: Miami, it should be reminded, returned to boffo ratings these past two weeks, and in this past Tuesday's special airing gave CBS its best numbers in that 10 o'clock slot in some five years. Do not underestimate the power of the Jesse Spano fan. — MWM read more
