Drew By Day; Comedy Tonight

Drew Carey host of The Price Is Right by Monty Brinton/CBS

Giggling at the antics of the slap-happy contestants who “come on down” at what he calls “the happiest place on Earth,” Drew Carey looks like he’s having a blast, and looks right at home, on the spiffed-up set of The Price Is Right as he takes over as host today. There’s no fuss and no ceremony, and outside of the introduction telling us we’re at the Bob Barker Studio in Television City, and that one of the games is still called “Barker’s Bargain Bar,” and that Carey chooses to sign off with the traditional plea to have your pets spayed, there’s no actual homage to the former host as the new Price era begins. And yet, probably the greatest tribute to Bob Barker is that the show goes on, and goes on effortlessly with its funny-looking new ringleader, who appears to be genuinely tickled at the breathless excitement of the frantic folks who come to play the game. When one of the contestants does a cartwheel after taking the stage, C... read more

March 5, 2007: A Stone of the Heart

The original title of this show was supposed to be: The Truth According to Joey Ice Cream. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank whoever nixed that idea. Don’t get me wrong, I love the character, but I don’t get it. How does Joey (Keith Nobbs) know everything? Sure, he keeps saying, “Oh, well, I was there.” But he only painted himself into the background after his lawyer asked him how he knew what had happened. He never placed himself at the hospital, in the van, or where Tommy and Kevin got rid of Louie’s body. This episode was all about Tommy (Jonathan Tucker) and Kevin (Billy Lush). The best scenes have been between the two of them: last week during the elevator scene and this week in Nicky Cottero’s bar. When Tommy began to walk to the back room to see Nicky and saw Kevin sitting in a booth, I think we were all a bit shocked. I didn’t think they were on very good terms after they had beaten each other to the ground. Kevin had pulled a ... read more

Jeri Ryan Tells All About Swimming with CBS' Shark

Jeri Ryan, Shark

Shark star Jeri Ryan speaks with TV Guide about this week's arresting episode (airing tonight at 10 pm/ET on CBS), life after Seven of Nine and her real-life wedding news. TV Guide: When are we going to learn more about DA Jessica Devlin, James Woods' ambitious boss on Shark? Jeri Ryan: This week's episode is the first one where I actually have a lot to do. You find out about Jessica's past, and it humanizes her. It ties into an old case involving a child murderer, before she was the DA. When she first prosecuted the guy 15 years before, he was being defended by James' character, Sebastian Stark. She was convinced he was guilty and did things that weren't on the up-and-up to put him away read more

Has NCIS' Gibbs Met His Match in Susanna Thompson?

NCIS' Mark Harmon, Susanna Thompson

On Nov. 7 (postponed from its previously announced airdate of Oct. 24), Susanna Thompson (Once and Again, The Book of Daniel) pops up on CBS' NCIS (Tuesdays at 8 pm/ET) as an Army investigator who catches the attention (or is that a-tenn-shun?) of special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). The versatile actress recently took a call from TV Guide to discuss what may blossom into a full-fledged love affair for Harmon's oft-taciturn, coffee-addicted character. TV Guide: Cranky-pants Gibbs in love? Will read more

Las Vegas Well, they didn't call...

Las VegasWell, they didn't call this episode "Down and Dirty" for nothing. A porn convention takes up temporary residence at the Montecito, which means I can't write about half the things that happened; I'm going to take the high road and remain somewhat family-friendly. Let me just say that there was an ample amount of adult-oriented puns, situations, fun porn movie titles and a cameo from some guy I've never heard of named Ron Jeremy. (That's the story I'm sticking to.) Let's move on to things of the Barry Bostwick persuasion, shall we? Called on to direct Big Ed's TV commercial, it turns out his character used to date Ed's wife, Jillian. Let's see, Cheryl Ladd and Barry Bostwick. A few Googles later and I find out that back in the day (1978), Barry was in a Se read more

Nothing puts a damper on your...

Nothing puts a damper on your workplace Halloween festivities quite like an imminent firing — although I do have a fun story about a woefully interrupted Chrismukkah luncheon I should probably save for another forum. It's a credit to this show that in the midst of all my chuckling over Dwight's costume and the unfortunately vacuumed-up party decorations, deep down I was pretty darn nervous about possibly losing one of these characters. Which is why that cliff-hanger of a commercial break that made it look like Jim was on the chopping block led to this living-room scene: me staring slack-jawed at the television and demanding aloud, "So help me, Michael Scott, if you fire Jim I will storm out of this office so fast it'll make your head swim." And then I remembered that I don't actually work at Dunder-Mifflin, got embarrassed, and went to the fridge for a composure-regaining soda. (While we're at it, let's just get all my humiliating Office-watching quirks out on the table. read more

This is only the beginning of...

This is only the beginning of October and guess what? NBC hits us with a Crossing Jordan-Las Vegas crossover stunt. Oh, joy. On Sunday a perfect storm of circumstances enabled Danny to hop on a plane to Beantown to help Jordan and Woody figure out why a Montecito showgirl jumped to her death in front of the morgue crew. Not so sure about the Jordan-Danny chemistry, but I did dig the Danny and Woody frat-boy rivalry that managed to be simultaneously dorky and cute. And like the good procedural that Crossing Jordan is, the case was wrapped in a neat and tidy little package in under an hour... well, sort of. Woody was still in the City of Lost Wages steaming things up with Sam, and Danny invited Jordan to join him at the Montecito (for a little somethin'-somethin', maybe?). Jordan hesitated and mentioned something about not being the spontaneous type. So, not realistic. The "Crossing Over Vegas" spectacular continued on Monday night read more

TALE OF THE COMET

More than 20 years after the sci-fi comedy Night of the Comet had its day, the cult classic is getting a sequel. Leading lady Kelli "Daddy would've gotten us Uzis" Maroney and writer-director Thom Eberhardt (Parker Lewis Can't Lose) are producing the follow-up, in which we'll learn how the original's boy-crazy heroines (Maroney and Catherine Mary Stewart of Weekend at Bernie's) fared at repopulating the world with lucky, lucky Robert Beltran (Star Trek: Voyager). read more

Premise: A starship is stranded in the uncharted Delta Quadrant in this fourth 'Star Trek' series, the first to feature a female captain. Here, the crew grudgingly teams with Maquis rebels to try to return to Earth after Voyager is hurtled 70,000 light-years from Federation space. The show's two-hour premiere coincided with the UPN network's launch. Genevieve Bujold was originally cast as Janeway, but was replaced by Kate Mulgrew after only a few days of filming.
