Star Trek: The Next Generation Holy Starship! The complete series in one Borg-tacular cube may be too much for even the most geeeked-out Trekker. 49 discs, 176 episodes, Picard doing all sorts of Make it so. Its stunning. And quite powerful, lemme tell you. Having never watched the show back when it was on because, you know, I was out doing messed up stuff to ruin my life, the phenomenon escaped me. Well, no more! I now get what the big whoo hoo is about with this one and Im not ashamed to admit it. Not that Im booking a trip to one of those ...

Question: What is your take on the cast changes on Stargate Atlantis? I'm personally pretty happy that SG-1's Amanda Tapping is making the trip to Atlantis. It seemed pretty inevitable: Someone was going to cross over after Torri Higginson's role was minimized. Anyway, as an objective party who's never been all that entrenched in the series, what is your opinion? Also, have you heard the theory that Higginson wanted out of her contract?
Answer: I honestly don't know the circumstances of this cast change, but churn like this is inevitable on just about any long-running show — although experience has told me that any time a major change happens on a cult sci-fi/fantasy series, there will be some outcry. (Remember the fuss when Michael Shanks left SG-1 for a season? I certainly do!) From where I sit, as a detached observer who never got deeply involved in either series (they're enjoyable but, to me, not habit-forming), this all makes perfect sense. I think of Worf migrating from Star Trek:

Question: In Monday's Ask Matt column, you were asked about season finales that left the audience as awestruck as this year's Lost season finale did. You of course discussed 24's first season and the famous "Who Shot J.R.?" from Dallas, but I really think you left out one of the more definitive season finales in TV history: Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Best of Both Worlds, Part 1." If you were watching TV back in 1990, how can you forget this pitch-perfect, cliff-hanging episode of Next Gen? I remember rewatching the episode many times that summer, wondering how the producers and writers would resolve the famous "Mr. Worf, fire..." line. While I think Lost's season finale was good, in my mind, this is the gold standard of season finales and season-ending cliff-hangers. And few shows have come close to matching it since.
Answer: An absolute oversight. Time and again TV Guide has put this episode on lists of greatest-ever episodes, and not just for the sci-fi genre. The Borg was ...

Question: I really enjoy your column; I read it every week! In light of recent episodes of Battlestar Galactica and your comment in your column about the practical impossibility of Katee Sackhoff (or any other member of the BSG cast in general) ever getting recognition for their work, I was wondering if you had any thoughts about the psychology of why there is such a huge prejudice against sci-fi/fantasy/horror TV, even when it is often the best stuff on TV. (Other than BSG, I'm thinking about Buffy and Angel, and, back in the day, the better Star Trek franchises.) Personally, I've always been a little disturbed by what I see as an unnaturally strong aversion to good sci fi (aka not Heroes — sorry, I tried, but it's just so ridiculously cheesy) on the part of many people. For instance, I know a family friend who became a fan of Star Trek: TNG (not a "going-to-conventions-every-week" fan, just a regular viewer) and whose wife subsequently forbid all sci-fi/fantasy TV shows and movies in the ...

NCIS' Mark Harmon, Susanna Thompson
On Nov. 7 (postponed from its previously announced airdate of Oct. 24), Susanna Thompson (Once and Again, The Book of Daniel) pops up on CBS' NCIS (Tuesdays at 8 pm/ET) as an Army investigator who catches the attention (or is that a-tenn-shun?) of special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). The versatile actress recently took a call from TV Guide to discuss what may blossom into a full-fledged love affair for Harmon's oft-taciturn, coffee-addicted character.
TV Guide: Cranky-pants Gibbs in love? Will

Question: My husband and I have a bet — just for bragging rights — about whether or not Matthew Broderick ever appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation. I say no; he says yes. Which of us is right, oh, wise Televisionary?
Answer: Oh, wise Gail, if only you'd been wise enough to bet your husband something cool, like dinner, or a nice bottle of wine... or something. For you, in keeping with the trend of the person who bothers to write in being the one in the know, are correct.
To my knowledge, Broderick never appeared on the show. (And if I'm wrong, I'll hear about it — oh, will I hear about it — and will let you know.)

Nothing puts a damper on your workplace Halloween festivities quite like an imminent firing — although I do have a fun story about a woefully interrupted Chrismukkah luncheon I should probably save for another forum. It's a credit to this show that in the midst of all my chuckling over Dwight's costume and the unfortunately vacuumed-up party decorations, deep down I was pretty darn nervous about possibly losing one of these characters. Which is why that cliff-hanger of a commercial break that made it look like Jim was on the chopping block led to this living-room scene: me staring slack-jawed at the television and demanding aloud, "So help me, Michael Scott, if you fire Jim I will storm out of this office so fast it'll make your head swim." And then I remembered that I don't actually work at Dunder-Mifflin, got embarrassed, and went to the fridge for a composure-regaining soda. (While we're at it, let's just get all my humiliating Office-watching quirks out on the table.
