What is your take on the cast ...

Question: What is your take on the cast changes on Stargate Atlantis? I'm personally pretty happy that SG-1's Amanda Tapping is making the trip to Atlantis. It seemed pretty inevitable: Someone was going to cross over after Torri Higginson's role was minimized. Anyway, as an objective party who's never been all that entrenched in the series, what is your opinion? Also, have you heard the theory that Higginson wanted out of her contract? Answer: I honestly don't know the circumstances of this cast change, but churn like this is inevitable on just about any long-running show — although experience has told me that any time a major change happens on a cult sci-fi/fantasy series, there will be some outcry. (Remember the fuss when Michael Shanks left SG-1 for a season? I certainly do!) From where I sit, as a detached observer who never got deeply involved in either series (they're enjoyable but, to me, not habit-forming), this all makes perfect sense. I think of Worf migrating from Star Trek: read more

Meet the Parents

Welcome to another episode of Men in Trees [Thursdays at 10 pm/ET, on ABC]. This week's installment, "The Indecent Proposal," was written by our creator, Jenny Bicks. She is also a great blogger, so you should check out what she says about this one on the writers' blog at ABC.com. I know it sounds like I'm plugging the ABC website every week, but I promise I'm not some shameless promoter for the network. I just enjoy reading what our writers are thinking. This episode was exciting for me because it's the first time I have a scene with Jane (Seana Kofoed). In fact, this will be the first time that our characters ever speak to one another on the show. Seana and I were always saying to each other, "Wouldn't it be hilarious if Jane went out to Queens with Annie and met her insane family?" Well, Jenny Bicks must be a mind reader, because that's exactly what happens! Annie is bringing Patrick home to meet the parents and announce their engagement, and she tries to set up Jane with her cut... read more

24 Exclusive: Look Who's Returning!

Just got off the phone with my 24 mole and he/she informs me that Eric Balfour has signed on to reprise his Season 1 role as independent CTU contractor Milo Pressman. My spy wouldn't say how Milo would be re-introduced, but he'll be sticking around for a while: Balfour will be credited as a series regular. (If you need a refresher on who Milo is, click here.)In other 24 news, former Star Trek: Deep Space Nine doc Alexander Siddig is joining the cast as one of the evildoers behind the big Season 6 plot. Additionally, Carlo Rota (aka Mr. Chloe O'Brian) will be back as a series regular. And now, in completely unrelated news, a rep for CBS' new Thursday-night drama Shark confirms that James Woods has had a death in the family and production has been temporarily halted. That's all the scoop that's fit to print. For now. read more

Nothing puts a damper on your...

Nothing puts a damper on your workplace Halloween festivities quite like an imminent firing — although I do have a fun story about a woefully interrupted Chrismukkah luncheon I should probably save for another forum. It's a credit to this show that in the midst of all my chuckling over Dwight's costume and the unfortunately vacuumed-up party decorations, deep down I was pretty darn nervous about possibly losing one of these characters. Which is why that cliff-hanger of a commercial break that made it look like Jim was on the chopping block led to this living-room scene: me staring slack-jawed at the television and demanding aloud, "So help me, Michael Scott, if you fire Jim I will storm out of this office so fast it'll make your head swim." And then I remembered that I don't actually work at Dunder-Mifflin, got embarrassed, and went to the fridge for a composure-regaining soda. (While we're at it, let's just get all my humiliating Office-watching quirks out on the table. read more

Premise: Different races try to coexist peacefully in the third `Star Trek' spin-off. This one takes place on a 24th-century space station that serves as a frontier town on the edge of a wormhole that enables travelers to journey vast distances in short periods of time. The syndicated series included several characters from its predecessor, `Star Trek: The Next Generation,' and had a healthy seven-season run.
