The Creator of Scrubs Diagnoses the State of TV Comedy

My name is Bill Lawrence, and I like television comedy. (Way to go, Bill, the first step is admitting it.) The landscape of television is changing overnight. Scrubs isn't on the fall schedule again. "Impossible," you say, "NBC has always treated the show so well in each of its 160 time slots." But alas, it's true. This is very much a show that has been finding its way in fits and starts through an uneven yet highly enjoyable first year. If it was overhyped, which on the strength of its sensational pilot it could have been, the impatience with its growing pains would ... read more

Premise: New York City's unflappable, charismatic deputy mayor makes his clueless boss look good in this sharply written, well-played sitcom. Parkinson's disease forced Michael J. Fox to leave the show in 2000, the year he won the Emmy as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. He was replaced by Charlie Sheen, who stayed with the show until its end in 2002.
