First Aired: April 2, 2003
“Fame” profiles two artists on the cusp of it: dancer Rasta Thomas and artist Chris Johanson. Both have decisions to make. For Thomas, a San Francisco native whom choreographer Debbie Allen calls “one of the most amazing talents of the last decade,” it's what kind of dancer to be: he's adept at many types and doesn't want to be tied down. Johanson, a Mission-based painter who also constructs installations, is seen at his Manhattan gallery opening. He had “a breakthrough year in 2002,” says narrator Pamela Z, but “hopes never to be a household name.” Also: violinist Joshua Bell in rehearsal at San Francisco's Davies Symphony Hall; auditions for “Amateur Night at the Apollo” at Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall.
