  • SAG Goes Mad for Men | Matt Roush | 12/20/2007
I suppose I could dwell on the fact that a major Hollywood guild has once again ignored the very existence of TV's finest acting ensemble, Friday Night Lights — in favor of the mugging and posturing on Boston Legal. As they'd say on another SAG favorite, Grey's Anatomy: Seriously? Is it wrong to want to form our own picket line? Also: What's up with snubbing Pushing Daisies and its fantastical cast? And yet the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, announced Thursday morning, did shower... read more
  • SAG Awards: Did Your TV Faves Make the Cut? | Today's News: Our Take | 12/20/2007
Nominations for the 14th-annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, to (hopefully!) be held Jan. 27, are out, and the big story is on the cinematic side, where Into the Wild topped the pack with four nods, Golden Globes fave Atonement got shut out, and Cate Blanchett is entered in two races. TV-wise, 30 Rock, Ugly Betty and The Sopranos netted three nods each. The details:Male Actor in a Drama SeriesJames Gandolfini, The SopranosMichael C. • New Blood at the Globes | Matt Roush | 12/13/2007
If the barometer of an interesting TV awards show is the number of fresh faces invited to the party, then the Golden Globe nominations (announced Thursday morning) passes the test. Not with a perfect score, mind you. Any institution that so completely ignores NBC's wonderful Friday Night Lights deserves some spirited jeering. And the Globes' addiction to sexy sizzle and hype can lead to some puzzling choices: Big Love, fun as it is, over The Sopranos' final season? Bill Paxton over James... read more
  • Sopranos Creator in Court on "Theft" Charges | Today's News: Our Take | 12/12/2007
David Chase reported to a Trenton, NJ, courthouse on Wednesday morning to defend himself against former New Jersey municipal court judge Robert Baer's claim that ideas of his ideas helped Chase bring The Sopranos to life. Baer, also a former assistant prosecutor, filed suit in 2002, alleging that he suggested to Chase a TV series about organized crime in Jersey and gave Chase a crash course on the North Jersey mob, and as such wants credit and compensation. According to the AP, opening... read more
  • On a Busy Sunday, Praising Brotherhood | Matt Roush | 12/3/2007
This Sunday, it sure didn't feel as if the sweeps month had already ended. Major pivotal episodes of ABC's hit series, a movie special on CBS (one of the better Hallmark Hall of Fames to air in a while) and, somewhat lost in the shuffle, a season finale of one of TV's more underappreciated dramas. That's a lot to digest.First off, the watercooler show of the night was unquestionably Desperate Housewives, capping an above-par season with the long-awaited arrival of a devastating twister. The... read more
  • I was excited to see that ... | Matt Roush | 11/19/2007
Question: I was excited to see that HBO's The Wire has completed production and is still set to air this season, despite the strike. Do you think the fact that it may be one of only a few shows on the air next year will mean that it finally gets the award recognition it deserves? Answer: That would be one of the few positives to come out of this, wouldn't it? Also in its favor will be the many tributes The Wire is likely to receive in the media, with this being its final season, and now that... read more
  • 30 Rock: The Height of Hilarity | Matt Roush | 11/16/2007
Every week, after laughing myself silly at the warped lunacy of 30 Rock on Thursday nights and then being greeted by the stubbornly low ratings on Friday morning, I’m more than ever convinced that this inspired comedy is the new Arrested Development. (And not just because it’s a dark-horse Emmy winner, also taking home the best-comedy trophy after its first season.) Here’s another cult classic that is apparently too off-kilter to be more than an acquired taste, unfortunately... read more
  • I am going to preface my ... | Matt Roush | 11/16/2007
Question: I am going to preface my question by trying to establish a little street cred. My favorite shows include Veronica Mars, Friday Night Lights, Battlestar Galactica, The Sopranos and The Wire. While I have enjoyed new shows like Dirty Sexy Money and Chuck, there has been one show, to my big surprise, that has become my favorite: Moonlight. I know, the pilot was horrible. I originally checked it out to see alums from Veronica Mars and Alias, but I have stayed because of Alex O'Loughlin. I... read more
  • Shooter Jennings Honors Country Giant Hank, Awaits Baby with Drea | Today's News: Our Take | 11/16/2007
His terrific new album, The Wolf, may address his outsider status in country music, but country-rock rebel Shooter Jennings has been anything but a loner of late. He’s about to start a family with his girlfriend of six years, Sopranos actress Drea de Matteo; he’s thrilling crowds with a kickass live show on his current tour; and on Saturday night, he joins a host of rowdy friends (including Kid Rock, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Steven Tyler) to honor the music of... read more
  • I was wondering what you ... | Matt Roush | 10/26/2007
Question: I was wondering what you thought of David Chase's comments excerpted from an interview in the upcoming The Sopranos: The Complete Book. He kind of spit in the fans' faces and told them to get a life. Since reading that interview, I will never watch or buy anything made by him or his production company. What kind of pretentious jerk tells people that there is a war going on and that we should care about other things? He didn't seem to mind that there was a war going on when he picked... read more
  • Celebs Hit Streets for Trump's New Apprentice | Today's News: Our Take | 10/19/2007
Celebrities are now vying for the position of Donald Trump's "top dog" by taking their business to the streets. Literally.Seven of 14 celebs on The Apprentice's first celebrity edition were behind two Sabrett hot-dog carts in midtown Manhattan Friday afternoon to tape a challenge for the NBC show. Led by America’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan on the megaphone, the celebrities stopped curious passersby for a donation to charity and an authentic New York street hot dog. At another location,... read more
  • Recently you've been letting ... | Matt Roush | 10/19/2007
Question: Recently you've been letting the world know how great a show Dexter is. I think Hugh Laurie is incredible in House, but if Michael C. Hall doesn't win an Emmy for dramatic male performance, I have to believe that Emmy voters have never themselves acted. The man is a revelation. What I want to talk about, though, is Brotherhood, the show that follows Dexter. No one ever talks about it, even though it is better than 98 percent of all other television shows, from Annabeth Gish's powerful... read more
  • Not only do I think Damages ... | Matt Roush | 10/15/2007
Question: Not only do I think Damages was the best new show to air this summer, I now have to say it is the best show on television! I usually can't stand it when shows do flashbacks, then revert to real time and go back and forward again. But Damages does it so well, and that device makes its stories all the more compelling. Here's my question, though: Will Damages be back for a second season? I ask because they have killed off so many of their major players; will enough cast members be left... read more
  • Soprano Jamie-Lynn Sigler Tests Her Karma | Today's News: Our Take | 10/12/2007
After playing the daughter of a New Jersey mafioso for eight years, former Soprano Jamie-Lynn Sigler is now leaving Meadow for greener — and creepier — pastures. She'll be playing a teacher with ties to a coven of witches in the Lifetime miniseries The Gathering (Saturday at 9 pm/ET), which concludes its two-night run tonight. TV Guide talked to Sigler about scary movies, unexpected endings and a possible Sopranos flick. TV Guide: There's some wild and crazy stuff... read more
  • When Emmy Winners Attack! | Today's News: Our Take | 9/26/2007
OK, first off, how freakin’ hilarious was The Bachelor Monday night? Holy human desperation, I loved it! And Hillary from my hometown made the first cut. Represent, Philly ‘ho!Now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk last week’s Emmys. Yes, the in-the-round stage was a hot circular mess and why so many statues went to TV-movies, I’ll never know. It’s not like any of the good Sci Fi Originals get nominated. Hello, Mansquito? So robbed. But Seacrest... read more
  • I religiously read your ... | Matt Roush | 9/24/2007
Question: I religiously read your column and love every show you positively review. So earlier in the summer my husband and I checked out Brotherhood on Showtime On Demand. Wow! We watched the whole first season within a couple of days and were so depressed there weren't more than 11 episodes. I know I will make Sopranos fans mad by saying this, but I really believe this is a better show. The two shows seem very similar, but I really care about all the characters in this show, unlike on The... read more
  • I've been watching episodes ... | Matt Roush | 9/21/2007
Question: I've been watching episodes of Crossing Jordan on A&E for a few weeks now and find it pretty entertaining, so I looked up the date of the new season premiere and read that NBC had canceled it. Just like that, on a cliff-hanger? I know it's been on for six seasons, but what bothers me most is how it ended. The finale didn't feel like a series finale. The producers clearly didn't know they weren't getting another season. Are the rumors of its cancellation true? If so, how... read more
  • After watching the dreadful ... | Matt Roush | 9/21/2007
Question: After watching the dreadful Emmys, I'm wondering if there is any thought of eliminating this awards show, or at the very least completely overhauling the format. Who could honestly claim that this year's show celebrated the best in television over the past year? Let's review the problems with the Emmys: 1) The nomination process: When only three networks existed, I'm sure it wasn't difficult to decide who to nominate. But now with five major networks and dozens of free and pay-cable... read more
  • Bitchslaps, a Babe Named Locklear and Big Sopranos News | Today's News: Our Take | 9/19/2007
Don’t laugh, but in the summer of 1981, I lived for three things: the birth of MTV, the Royal wedding and the identity of the bitch in the big hat who stormed Blake’s murder trial at the end of Dynasty’s first season. As you can probably tell, I wasn’t a normal kid. Didn’t even climb a tree until I had to outrun the cops in high school. Don’t ask, don’t tell, OK?Anyway, for the kiddies among us, MTV used to show things called music videos and had veejays with... read more
  • Emmys: Bravo to Winners, Boo to Show | Matt Roush | 9/17/2007
And some people worried that getting Ryan Seacrest to host this year’s Emmy telecast was going to be the producers’ worst idea. That’s before we got a look at the set, an unwieldy and unappealing theater-in-the-round setup that looked more suitable for the new American Gladiators revival than for an awards show. The nominees, half of whom saw only the backs of the various presenters and performers, had a deer-in-the-headlights look every time Seacrest approached them or the... read more

Premise: A conflicted New Jersey crime boss seeks therapy to cope with mob and family pressures in this addictive, stunningly original drama, which can be chillingly violent, wrenchingly moving or darkly funny. Well deserving of its many Emmys and other awards, this HBO masterwork created by Garden State native David Chase has become Sunday-night appointment viewing, with passionate fans mostly carping about waiting ridiculously long stretches (more than a year) for new seasons of original episodes.
