soap
An endearingly nutty (and controversial for its time) soap-opera parody focusing on two sisters, Jessica and Mary, and their respective dysfunctional families. `Soap' offered an irreverent take on such subjects as adultery, homicide and homosexuality through the outrageous behavior of the upper-crust Tates and the blue-collar Campbells. The Susan Harris series received four Emmys, and launched a successful spin-off sitcom showcasing Robert Guillaume's character, Benson.

  • Comic-Con Roundup | Today's News: Our Take | 8/1/2006
The lines were longer than ever at this year's Comic-Con International, the annual celebration of all things geeky. Just ask the thousands of Battlestar Galactica fans who waited en masse outside of Ballroom 20 to see their favorite Cylons and colonials in the flesh. Meanwhile, the queue for New Line's special Snakes on a Plane presentation snaked (ha ha ha) out the door and down the side of the massive convention center. There are only two possible explanations for the sheer number of people who invaded San Diego for that weekend: 1) Nerds have learned how to clone themselves or 2) Geek culture is now mainstream culture. Either way, Comic-Con '06 was one for the ages. Here are some of the highlights and lowlights of the four-day extravaganza. Question: Your comments on the Night Court actors reminded me that I had a crush on the woman who played the court clerk before Mac. What was her name, and did she do anything else besides Night Court?Answer: That she did, and that she does, Bill. You're thinking of actress Karen Austin and her character, court clerk Lana Wagner, who was replaced on the comedy after a season by Charlie Robinson's Mac Robinson. Austin did a lot of guest work on such series as Happy Days, read more
  • Nip/Tuck How do I start? Hmm.... | Today's News: Our Take | 12/21/2005
Nip/TuckHow do I start? Hmm. How about this. The show ended and my cell phone rang. It was TVGuide.com's own Daniel Coleridge. I answered because I was dying to hear what he thought of tonight's two-hour season finale. Daniel's a good friend and besides, he's the one who covered Nip/Tuck for Watercooler before I took over this season. "I'm disappointed!" declared Daniel. "Me too!" said I. So at least I wasn't alone. Why oh why did they make Quentin the Carver?!? How terribly predictable. FX even tried throwing us off by releasing that photo of a bloody and carved Quentin. Then they showed Liz being interrogated in last week's coming attractions — another way to throw us off. When that Carver mask came off and it was Quentin's face, I screamed "No!" I so wanted it to be someone we read more
  • I recorded Nip/Tuck for the ... | Matt Roush | 11/11/2005
Question: I recorded Nip/Tuck for the first time ever to catch Anne Heche in the first episode of her story arc. I noticed that one of the producers was Jennifer Salt. The Jennifer Salt? Eunice Tate from Soap? Just curious.
Answer: Yep, one and the same. She's not the only former performer on Nip/Tuck's talented writing/producing staff. Those with good sitcom memories may remember co-executive producer Lyn Greene (then known as Lynnie) co-starring with Bess Armstrong in the 1977 comedy On Our Own ... read more
