So You Think You Can Dance Episode Recap: The Top 10 Revealed Season 7, Episode 7

Surprise! The bottom three contains at least one shocking member, Usher debuts the new Justin Bieber video featuring Usher, and the first of our Top 11 dancers goes home.  Who could it be? Take a peek at the first results show of the season.

We open with a group performance. The trouble is that 11 dancers are still too many to focus on all at once. No one really stands out though a few are hitting their moves a little harder than others. The best part is definitely when a couple of the guys use Alexie/Ashley (the camera is too far away to tell) as a human jump rope. Melinda gets a little barefoot soft shoe going and I find it super annoying. Guys, I really think I'm starting to dislike her. I can't explain it, but when she did her little sexy body roll thing my finger automatically reached for the fast-forward button. By the way, the song is "Acapella" by Kelis if you are wondering.

During the reintroduction of the judges, Nigel takes the opportunity to pimp National Dance Day. It will take place on July 31st and a dance routine created by Napoleon and Tabitha especially for that day is available to download at www.dizzyfeetfoundation.org. It's certainly a cool idea. Of course, in my head everyone will just spontaneously start dancing in the streets that day. I can't be alone in that wish though.

The first group: Alex, Robert, Lauren, Kent

This group definitely looks like a possible top four. All of the guys were phenomenal last night and Lauren showed enough potential to keep her in the competition.

Alex is safe.

Robert is safe.

Kent and Lauren hold hands, terrified.

Kent is safe.

Kent hugs Lauren saying he loves her and it's very sweet. And then Cat drops the first bombshell:

Lauren is safe.

Cat really plays with them here, but it makes for a fantastic moment. She interrupts Kent's comforting words to Lauren in order to reveal that she's also safe and, in response, Kent picks her up and carries her around the stage.

The second group: Melinda, Billy, Ashley, Alexie

These four definitely seem shakier. I think Melinda will end up in the bottom three definitely. Maybe that's wishful thinking on my part. I'm really scared that Alexie might go home tonight. I love her, but she really hasn't shown us the talent and personality that endeared her to me during those days in Vegas.

Melinda is in the bottom three.

Billy is safe.

Ashley is safe

Alexie is in the bottom three.

Noooooo! I don't want Alexie to be voted off so soon. Mia tells her it's time to "download." I hope she can pull this off.

Last group: Jose, Adechike, Christina

My guess is that Adechike will end up in the bottom three. Christina showed such a different side during her piece last night. Adechike's number was more easily accessible though, so I could be wrong. There is no way Jose goes home tonight.

Jose is safe.

Adechike is safe.

Christina is in the bottom three.

Seriously? As much as the dance didn't really do anything for me, I thought she was still better at inhabiting that character.

Guest Performance No. 1: Karine Plantadit and Keith Roberts from Twyla Tharp's Broadway show Come Fly Away.

"That's Life" by Frank Sinatra plays and I'm already in love with these two. I really appreciate the guest dancers more than the singers most of the time and this performance is no exception. They are simply amazing and truly show what our contestants have to look forward to if they keep growing. Oh! Jacket toss — I'm a sucker for that move. Frank Sinatra would be proud; sultry and beautiful all at the same time.

Cat Deeley scolds the judges for goofing off. One of the things I like about the show is that the judges genuinely seem to like one another even when they "fight." This show is infused with such a fantastic vibe thanks to them.

Solo Performance: Melinda
Song: "I Got the Feelin'" by James Brown

She's tapping. Normally I go crazy for tap dancing. I just don't think that what she does is interesting enough for this show. Tap dancing is, or has at least become, her crutch.

Solo Performance: Alexie
Song: "I've Been Loving You Too Long" by Otis Redding

Love, love, love the song and I love Alexie, but I'm just not moved by her in this moment. I think her survival depends on how receptive people are to a tap routine.

Solo Performance: Christina
Song: "La Guarachera" by Celia Cruz and Tito Puente

Yep. I think Christina is staying. She's just so exciting to watch. It's definitely going to come down to Alexie or Melinda.

The judges confer.

Guest Performance No. 2: Usher performing "OMG"

No matter what you think of Usher — and I like him so don't get any ideas — you have to admit he's a phenomenal performer. He works so hard during this song and I love that he's out of breath at some points. When you watch him, you watch one of the hardest working people in show business.

Usher intros "'Somebody to Love' featuring Usher." He says it exactly like that — twice. Usher used third person. My affection for Usher just went up two notches. Perhaps he has just as much fun saying his name as I do.

And am I the only one creeped out by the woman caressing Justin Bieber? He's 14, right?

Judges' Final Critiques:

Melinda — She would need to bring more fire if she remained on the show.

Christina — She brought the fire but not the steps. However, she was the only one of the three who seemed like she was dancing for her life.

Alexie — She must learn to dance to the extent of her movements. She's a little juvenile in her dance style and must find her maturity.

And the performer going home is...

Alexie.

Everyone looks heartbroken (including me). Adam reassures Alexie that she is very "hire-able" and absolutely beautiful. Kent is sobbing. Boo, judges! You made Kent cry.

So, what did you think? Are you disappointed that we've lost Alexie so soon? Which dancers are you banking on making the top three later this season? Discuss below and I'll see you next time.
