So You Think You Can Dance Episode Recap: Season Finale Part Two Season 7, Episode 23

A seven-year-old tap dancer shows up Nigel Lythgoe, a special guest dancer steps in for Alex Wong, and America's favorite dancer is crowned on Thursday's season finale. It's two hours of phenomenal routines and talented guest performers, so let's jump right in!

Well, tonight's the night. It's the final part of the finale — say that three times fast. Tonight we crown the winner of Season 7.

Group Performance:
Song:
"Ra" by Nathan Lanier

And it's Melinda starting us off. Geez, I wished some of her solos came out a little more like this while she was actually on the show. Alex Wong is dancing from a chair! I heart him so much! He's amazing even sitting down. Eventually all of the all-stars and this season's contestants gather onstage — with the top three in the lead — to kick this routine into high gear. It's fun, it's fast-paced, and I'll admit it made me want to see the tour.

Cat Deeley comes out looking floaty and beautiful in pink. She gives props to the choreographer and — that is Neil Patrick Harris sitting behind him! Please tell me he's going to be dancing Alex Wong's dance. Please, oh please, oh please.

Seven choreographers — including the judges — have appeared behind the judges' table for Thursday's finale.  As Cat starts the introduction, we get a montage of Nigel's hair through the ages. Mia's montage consists, of course, of all her "Mia-isms." Adam gets his own montage too with his faces taking top billing.

Here's who makes up the rest of the panel: Tyce Diorio, Stacey Tookey, Kenny Ortega, and Mary Murphy.

Next up is a video recap of last night's performances. Hey! Don't take away my job!

Tonight will follow the format of finales past with each of the judges picking a favorite performance — or two — from this past season to be re-visited. Of course, we'll see plenty of guest performances tonight, as well as a supposed tap dance from Nigel, and a special guest star taking on Alex's role in the famous Twitch hip-hop number from early on in the season.

And with all of that out of the way, on to the dancing!

Kenny's Favorite: Kent and Neil
Choreographer/Style:
Tyce Diorio/Broadway
Song:
"Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, Mo" from Damn Yankees (the 1994 original Broadway cast)

This one was great once again. You can kind of tell Kent is tired, but this routine was just as much fun the second time around as it was the first.

Nigel's First Favorite: Billy and Ade
Choreographer/Style:
Stacey Tookey/Contemporary
Song:
"Mad World (Alternate)" by Michael Andrews feat. Gary Jules

I just cannot take my eyes off of Billy during this number. I love the way he moves and the story he tells with his body. NPH seems impressed too.

Guest Performance No. 1: Quest Crew
Song:
"Suzy" by Caravan Place

Whoo! I am so glad they invited this troupe to perform! I don't know who in the group choreographs the numbers, but it's a lot of fun. It's so intricate in terms of the use of the stage.

Mia's First Favorite: Adechike and Comfort
Choreographer/Style:
Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo/Hip-hop
Song:
"Fallin" by Alicia Keys

Comfort just seems to get better and better with each performance. Ooo! It looks like she actually hit him this time. She did! Cat tells us she did, in fact, hit Adechike. Aw, he looks happy to be back even for one number.

Highlights of the lurve in the air this season. Poor Cat has been the subject of quite a bit of groping in the last couple months.

Kent and Anya
Choreographer/Style:
Jean-Marc Genereux and France/Cha Cha
Song:
"My First Kiss" by 30H!3 feat. Ke$ha

Huh. This wasn't necessarily one of the dances I thought they'd pick to re-do, but it is a lot of fun. It's a bit random because it seems like the only reason this dance is featured is to ensure Anya dances in the finale. Oh, dang. They were off there. Kent missed her hand and they both got off-beat for a moment.

Alex Wong sighting No. 2!

Tyce's Favorite: Robert and Dominic
Choreography/Style:
Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo/Hip-hop
Song:
"Scars" by Basement Jaxx feat. Kelis

I think Robert has gotten even better at this routine than he was the first time. I do so love this number. Cat gives both Dominic and Robert a balloon and a kiss on the cheek.

National Dance Day Highlights.  Dolphins doing the dance routine at Sea World and a NASA robot copying a few of the steps are featured.

Nigel's Tap Routine

Haha. Nigel comes out in a faux cast claiming the curse of Season 7 got him and he's too injured to perform.  A tiny seven-year-old cutie named Luke comes out on stage and offers to fill in for him. Um, really? This kid is a tap-dancing genius! How does he do that? He just out-danced any routine Melinda did on the show.

Guest Performance No. 2: The Manzari Brothers

Fantastic tapping. These guys create their own music through tapping. That is as it should be.

Nigel's Second Favorite: Lauren and Pasha
Choreography/Style:
Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo/Argentine Tango
Song:
"Oblivion" by Astor Piazzolla

I think this is my favorite of the ballroom routines this season.  Beautiful and sexy.

Adam's First Favorite: Robert and Allison

Choreography/Style: Travis Wall/Contemporary
Song:
"Fix You" by Coldplay

Oh no. The tears, they return. Allison and Robert together is something of a magical combination in this routine. Oh no. Did I sound too much like Mia right then?

Guest Performance No. 3: Russell and Lil' C
Song:
"Hazardous" by Buckmouth

Russell is fine, but I think Twitch will always outshine him when it comes to hip-hop. This routine is fun, but not particularly engaging or interesting.

Mary's Favorite: Jose and Dominic
Choreographer/Style:
Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo/ B-Boy
Song: "
Battle for the Beat" by District 78

Oh geez. I watch this routine and just get angry all over again. I like seeing Jose's improvements, but Dominic is still so much better.

Guest Performance No. 4: Charlie Bruce, the winner of the UK edition of So You Think You Can Dance
Choreographer/Style:
Mandy Moore/Contemporary
Song:
"I Surrender" by Celine Dion

Fog! Seriously, though, I'm really excited about seeing this girl perform. She's dancing with Neil and the two seem perfectly matched. Her lines are absolutely gorgeous and there's certainly something about her that draws you to her. If only the director would pick a better camera angle.

Cat calls all of the finalists out on stage. Robert is dressed for his Bollywood number, which is both cute and sad because Robert is the dancer in third place. He doesn't seem too surprised, though. Robert thanks everyone for the opportunity to appear on this stage. A very awkward man in a suit comes out and hands Robert a bouquet of flowers. Trust me, it feels a little weird the way it's done.

Adam's Second Favorite: Lauren and Twitch
Choreography/Style:
Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo/Hip-hop
Song:
"My Chicks Bad" by Ludacris and Nicki Minaj

Haha. I'm noticing even more steps than before. The cheekiness of this dance gets me every time.

Cat's Favorite: Alex and Allison
Choreography/Style:
Sonya Tayeh/Contemporary
Song:
"Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley

I'm so glad they're re-visiting this number. He's just so graceful. His dancing is the definition of effortless.

Alex Wong sighting No. 3! They keep making him stand up and I'm a little worried that it's probably not something he feels like doing right now.

Stacey's Favorite: Robert and Billy
Choreographer/Style:
Nakul Dev Mahajan /Bollywood
Song: "Ganesh" from the Bombay Dreams Soundtrack

Wow. I do not remember this routine being this good. I know I liked it, but I feel like both Billy and Robert nailed it this time. Robert must at least be a little relieved as well as disappointed.

Mia's Second Favorite: Kent and Neil
Choreography/Style:
Travis Wall/Contemporary
Song:
"How it Ends" by DeVotchKa

Definitely one of my favorites of this season as well. That foot in the face move freaks me out a little bit, though.

Guest Performance No. 5: Blackgold
Song:
"Shine"

Highlights from the whole season roll past as the band plays.

It's time for the special surprise guest who will be taking Alex's place in the awesome Twitch hip-hop number.

Guest Performance No. 6: Surprise Guest
Choreographer/Style:
Tabitha and Napoleon Dumo/Hip-hop
Song:
"Outta Your Mind" by Lil Jon and LMFAO

It's Ellen Degeneres! That is awesome! She's wearing Alex's clothes too. They've clearly slowed parts of the dance down for her, but she really pulls off a lot of the steps well. Ha! She kicked Twitch in the groin! Haha. And Ellen's signature dance move appears. I love it!

Alex Wong comes out on stage all smiles. He really seems tickled by the tribute. Ellen encourages everyone to go out and dance whether you've had a dance class or not.

Lauren and Kent are brought out on stage for one last time.

And the winner of So You Think You Can Dance is...

Lauren! Whoo hoo!

Kent gives her a long hug and is then walked off stage by that awkward man in the suit again. Russell comes out and hands Lauren the Gatorade bottle with her picture on it. Eventually, all of the dancers come out to join the celebration.

We made it! Woo hoo! There have been a lot of complaints about the format and the judges' comments this season, but how do you think the dancers compared to the competitors from the last six seasons? Do you plan on watching Season 8 or did the curse of Season 7 leave a bad taste in your mouth? Does your viewership depend on the presence of Alex Wong?

Give us your thoughts on this season below and sound off on how you think the show can best remedy its problems. We'll see you next season for So You Think You Can Dance.
