So You Think You Can Dance Episode Recap: "1 of 6 Voted Off" Season 7, Episode 17

Wait, what? Elimination tonight is both a shocker and a let-down, Lauren and Neil return to a creepy and awesome circus land, and a moving tribute is made to one of the modern legends of dance. Let's jump right in so everyone can start lodging their formal protests.

Group Performance:
Song: "All That Jazz" by Lea DeLaria

Great performance and a lot of fun. I have to say I really enjoy these group performances more now that the all-stars are a part of the number.

Injury recap: Billy's doing okay. He's still on the chopping block, though, so we'll see what happens.

Oh, interesting. There's a tribute to Denise Jefferson, the director of the Alvin Ailey School.

There's no National Dance Day update! Color me shocked

Results!

This week all five dancers who performed this week step out onto the stage.

Lauren is safe.

Kent is safe.

The other dancers will find out their fate after the break. Or after the first guest performance apparently.

Guest Performance No. 1: Jared Matthews and Yuriko Kajiya
Performing: Don Quixote Act III Grand Pas De Deux by Leon Minkus

This performance is such a nice change of pace from the usual guest performances this season. It's nice to have a straight ballet piece where the form and grace is the true center piece.

Results! Again! Except, no because there's another break.

Okay, now the rest of the results. I think.

Adechike is safe.

So, that means that both Robert and Jose are in the bottom two. I hope it's possible that Billy will be allowed to continue and that Jose might actually go home. Huh. No judges corner this week.

Guest Performance No. 2: DJ Smart
Song: "Say You Will" by Kanye West

Oh! It's this guy! His physicality is absolutely phenomenal and good God look at those thigh muscles. Do we remember why he wasn't part of the top 11? Oh right. Because almost every other guy in the competition is a contemporary dancer.

And we finally get the National Dance Day plug. People certainly look like their having fun.

All-Star Spotlight: Lauren and Neil
Song: "Night of the Dancing Flame" by Roisin Murphy

I had forgotten how strange this routine was at points — aka the screaming. Maybe it's the circus theme, but I never realized before how much this piece reminds me of Mirrormask. Well done to Neil and Lauren for having put this routine together.

Nigel announces the new So You Think You Can Dance tour line-up, or at least part of it. Here are the dancers joining the tour as of this moment: Allison from Season 2, Dominic from Season 3, Courtney from Season 4, Ade from Season 5, Russell and Kathryn from last season, and the top girl (Lauren obviously) and top guy from this season.  Four others will also be joining the tour but those names will be announced at a later date. My guess is that Ashley will be one of them as long as her ribs have healed.

Solo Performance No. 1: Robert
Song: "Fireflies" by Ron Pope

Robert throws a lot of energy into this solo and a little more pizzazz than we normally see from him. I like the movement of it though he seems unsure at a few points. Nigel has said this before, but I do think he needs to expand on each number, really fill the whole stage with his presence.

Solo Performance No. 2: Jose
Song: "It's Just Begun" by The Jimmy Castor Bunch
Honestly, I think Jose's breaking has improved since he's been on the show. He looks really great here and he does a great one-handed handstand towards the end. I do think he's growing but he's just not able to grow fast enough to compete with those around him.

The judges go off to deliberate.

Guest Performance No. 3: Enrique Iglesias with Pitbull
Song: "I Like It"
Is Enrique Iglesias getting younger? He looks 10 years younger than he did 10 years ago. There's some awesome dancing during this performance by Dominic, by the way, but you would never know it because, despite the fact that this is a dance show, the director spends all camera time on Pitbull with glancing shots of the all-stars in the back. For that reason alone, I think this is my least favorite of the guest performances so far.

Elimination:
This is where I call shenanigans once again because no one is going home. According to Nigel it's because it isn't entirely fair this week. If they keep Billy, he'll have had a week of rest not given to the other dancers. The judges want to keep Billy, so they decide to keep everyone this week and eliminate two people next week. Even Cat seems a little annoyed by this development.

So, how did the episode fare? It was a pretty anticlimactic results show obviously and I don't know how long the producers can pull these sorts of stunts before the viewing audience checks out. I suspect his non-elimination was a way to delay the inevitable dumping of Jose and prolong any possible ratings spike. Also, can the director please learn to use wide shots when showcasing dance routines?

How great is your anger at the judges this week? Who do you peg as the two to be eliminated a week from today?

Vent your own frustrations below and I'll see you next week for what I'm sure will be a jam-packed performance show.
