So You Think You Can Dance Episode Recap: Top 8 Revealed Season 5, Episode 17

After last night's show, during which they revealed a slightly new (and improved, in my opinion) format, two more dancers are whittled from the field. So, who's going home? You know I can't reveal that until later. Shall we group dance?

Choreographer/Genre: Wade and Amanda Robson/Pop jazz contemporary with a little ballet (this one's a little hard for me to classify as there's a lot going on here)
Title/Artist: "So Much Betta"/Janet Jackson
Performance: I love that Melissa is getting some time in the spotlight. Kayla and Jeanine are beautiful and cool. Janette and Randi are great too. Very cool. The guys are kind of in the background — even when they're in the foreground — because we can't see their faces but I like what they're doing. Great job.

Which choreographers earned Emmy nominations from last season's performances? Mia, NappyTabs, Tyce, and Dmitry. The make-up department also gets a nom, which makes me wonder what is going on with Cat's hair tonight. And her personality is sparkly enough that we don't need to see her in such a sparkly dress. I still love Cat, though.

Where's Nigel tonight? Who cares. Just kidding! He's receiving an honorary degree.

So, who's in trouble after last night's vote?

We start with the Top 5 ladies. The bottom two girls are Randi and Melissa, who will be dancing solos later in the show. I'm really surprised to see Melissa in the bottom two. I think she's a strong dancer, but I guess she's just not connecting with audiences.

And on to the gentlemen. The bottom two guys are Kupono and Ade. I'm genuinely shocked Ade is in the bottom two. I enjoyed him yesterday, and I thought he had more of a fan base. Boo.

Um, did you hear Cat mention that some of our favorite dancers will be back for the 100th episode? I can't wait. Yay! And what do you think about Ellen Degeneres being a guest judge next week? I love her and I watch her show every day. I'll reserve judgment until I hear her critiques.

Solos
Randi
Title/Artist: "Dream"/Priscilla Ahn
I enjoyed this performance more than yesterday's solo. I think she's a little less nervous and therefore more in control.
Mary's reaction: She's a heavenly little creature on the dance floor. Couldn't remember her best moments because she does something fabulous every week. Somehow she's still slightly under the radar. If she makes it through she should take more chances.
Debbie's reaction: Last night her solo was so powerful. Not a fan of the Paso Doble; she's had enough of it. Sometimes her brilliance can be a casualty of a dance style. Um, I love that Debbie admits to wearing a wig. The Paso Doble wasn't her best performance.

Kupono
Title/Artist: "Marina Gasolina"/Bonde Do Role
Still strange. And some of his costume is falling off of him.
Mary's reaction: She doesn't know what's gone wrong, but she's glad it's out of her hands now. Last night he didn't have the best night. If he's back next week she wants to see that volume, and strength, and power. He needs to rethink his solos if he sticks around.

Melissa
Title/Artist: "Gabriel"/Lamb
Still amazing. Great lines, great extension. Beautiful arms. I need to stop gushing.
Debbie's reaction: America is getting spoiled because the show is giving them so much. We're used to seeing her legs, her grace. She needs to go beyond in her solo. She needs to give us more.

Ade
Title/Artist: "Unchained Melody"/The Righteous Brothers
Strong. Technical. Fun. Impressive.
Mary's reaction: Ade is a star. She doesn't know what he should be doing differently.
Debbie's reaction: Ade's amazing.

Musical performer:
Black Eyed Peas singing "I Gotta Feeling."  There are dancers on the stage, which makes me happy.

So who is shown the door?

Randi — I do like her but I just don't think she's been a standout. I really enjoyed her with Evan, and I thought she'd be in trouble when that partnership broke up.

Kupono — Not shocking. It's his time to go. He's been at his best when given those quirky character pieces, but his solos were always weak.

I'm always sad to see dancers leave, but I think America made the right choice tonight.

Are you happy with these results? Were you surprised with Ade or Melissa being in the bottom two? Please share your thoughts below and don't forget to vote for your favorite dancer in our Power Rankings. Check back next week for the latest order.
