Tonight was very interesting for me. I don't always agree with the judges and tonight I'm wildly different on my thoughts for some of our dancers. I fear some of my opinions will be unpopular but hopefully that will only spur the debate.
Kherington and Twitch dance a hip-hop routine choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon
Nigel: Thinks they are brilliant dancers who have spirit and energy. Tabitha and Napoleon created a fantastic piece and they danced it brilliantly.
Mary: They are on the Top Ten Most Wanted list for
SYTYCD. Hard hitting. She thinks Kherington stepped up and Twitch killed it. They get one of Mary's patented screams.
Adam: Awesome. Fantastic. He thinks they'll be around a long time and gives them good constructive criticism.
I must admit that I didn't love it. I adore Kherington and Twitch but I think there was way too much storytelling and not enough dancing in this piece. I agree with Mary on Kherington stepping it up though. And of course Twitch is great in his own style. It just didn't work for me. I think the choreography really let these two wonderful dancers down.
Courtney and Gev dance a Rumba choreographed by Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin
Nigel: He's very happy. He thinks they did a really good job. He feels their connection and their passion. Gev reminds him of Dom (who's there in the studio audience) during the routine. He's loved Courtney's dress (or lack thereof).
Mary: Great job by Tony and Melanie. Beautiful. They nail the spiral turn. She's proud of them although she would have liked to see more melting into each other.
Adam: Really loves it. Gev is strong. He thinks they'll be around for a long time.
After what looked like a few technical problems (the slide down Gev's back wasn't smooth enough and Courtney's heel got caught in her dress), I really loved it. I think Courtney had great hip action. I felt it was PG-13 going on R sexy. I know Nigel liked her dress but a few times I thought we were going to get a peak of something naughty. But back to the dance. I think they did a great job. I felt the passion and connection.
Comfort and Chris dance Jazz choreographed by Tice DiOrio
Nigel: He expected a lot more from the props since they are featured so heavily in the intro. Chris is too soft but he thinks Comfort was there. Wants them to be stronger and more animalistic.
Mary: It falls short for her. The best part was the beginning.
Adam: They didn't do enough with what amounted to a giant performance piece. He wants to see the music moving through them instead of them merely dancing to the music.
I think it was cool and weird. It's possible I was distracted by the lights and the costumes, but I actually enjoyed it. I really like that it had African rhythms and influences and I would disagree and say Chris had the technique down better than Comfort. But what do I know? I'm just telling you my thoughts.
Jessica and Will dance a disco routine choreographed by Doriana Sanchez.
Nigel: He thinks they dance it very well. There were 2 or 3 areas that didn't go well, but they carry it off.
Mary: Also thinks they carry it off and she points out many of the great highlights. She's proud of Jessica, who is stepping it up. They are a lean, mean disco machine.
Adam: Really fantastic. He urges Jessica to stop getting in her own way and calls Will scary good.
Now we all know Doriana's disco routines can be hit or miss. Sometimes the dancers really step it up and showcase themselves and sometimes they fall flat. I agree with the judges and for the most part, I think they pull it off. There were some awkward parts and surprisingly (I'm surprised I'm even about to say this), I think Will overdid it in some parts. I think he's still the stronger dancer in this pairing but I thought a few of his movements were over exaggerated and they kind of took away from the dance. I thought many of the lifts were cool and they had great energy tonight.
Kourtni and Matt dance a contemporary routine choreographed by newcomer Sonya Tayeh.
Nigel: He thinks they've finally found a style they can work in. Quirky, different. The public may not get it, but other dancers will. He would like to see Matt relax a little bit more.
Mary: She thinks something weird is going on but she's totally buying it. Good techniques. Jumps were flawless.
Adam: Kourtni's control is beautiful. These two are who people are talking about when they're talking about people who should be dancing. Wants to see Matt dance into the floor a little more.
I really enjoy Kourtni and Matt's growing on me. I think his technique is amazing but he's still lacking some personality on the dance floor for me. I think Nigel would lump me into the general public on this one. I kind of didn't get it. I literally wrote down, "Don't know what to make of it." From what I could tell their technique is great but the piece is too strange and quirky for me. I think the choreographers need to remember that while we don't need to see trick after trick after trick we need to see these dancers perform in a way that will make us appreciate their technique and skill. I think because I'm not trained in dance, I couldn't see that in their piece tonight. I did see some good stuff, but they just didn't wow me.
Chelsea and Thayne dance the Quick Step choreographed by Heather Smith
Nigel: He could see that Thayne was trying to keep good body shape but they were too bouncy at times. We didn't see their personalities at all in this piece. He thinks they'd both better get their solos ready.
Mary: It's a difficult dance to pull off and they fall short. Comparing them to seasons past, Mary thinks they could have done better. She kicks Chelsea off the Hot Tamale train and tells Thayne he's just barely holding on.
Adam: He thinks they're great dancers but they didn't look comfortable or like they were in their element.
It's hard for me to really evaluate the ballroom dances. Mostly I just go on how it makes me feel. It felt kind of heavy and fake. It is very plain to see that Chelsea and Thayne aren't comfortable with this style. They did have smiles plastered on their faces throughout and it was very hard to get any personality through for either one. I'm disappointed that they started out so well and have stumbled in the past two weeks. I think they're trying but they've got to step up their game if they don't want to get sent home tomorrow night. I think the best part of the routine is the side-by-side dancing.
Chelsie and Mark dance a hip-hop routine choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon
Nigel: He's loving Tabitha and Napoleon. He thinks Chelsie and Mark are excellent. Good passion and movement.
Mary: Loved it. She believes the struggle. It was hard-hitting and smooth when it needed to be.
Adam: Awesome. Loves lyrical hip-hop. They both had it in their eyes. He thinks they're the couple to beat.
Now that's what I'm talking about. If Kherington and Twitch's piece had this kind of emotional resonance I would have loved it. I watched it twice that's when you know I love something. They have great energy and a connection that you feel throughout the piece. I don't know if I'd say they're the couple to beat but their in my top three.
Katee and Joshua dance the Samba choreographed by Tony and Melanie.
Nigel: Wow. Fabulous routine. Thinks Katee looks amazing and Joshua is a natural Samba dancer; has the right hip movements.
Mary: Hot. Animated. Spirited. They've got two 1st class tickets on the Hot Tamale train.
That's competing. Loved it. Thinks Katee is smoking. Great ending to the show.
Hot. Hot. Hot. I love these two dancers together and I also watched this piece twice. They bring it every single week. I was a little worried about Joshua because this seems very out of his comfort zone. Um, can I just say his hip action is awesome? Loved the tight pants. And Katee can never again say she isn't sexy or hot. She was working it and totally pulled it off.
My two favorite couples of the night were Chelsie & Mark and Katee & Joshua.
Who do I think will be dancing for their lives?
Chelsea and Thayne. They were too stiff and they seem to have checked their personalities at the door.
Kourtni and Matt. I'm just not sure people will pick up the phone and vote for them. I didn't get their piece and I think it's a pretty safe assumption that many people out there didn't either.
I think the last couple will either be Will & Jessica or Comfort & Chris. Disco has landed couples in the bottom before (I'm thinking of seasons past) and although I liked the African Jazz piece, I think Comfort and Chris should be a little worried.
Random thoughts, all Adam-centric:
- I always enjoy having Adam Shankman on the show. I hope he gets to choreograph the group dance tomorrow night. Besides being a fun choreographer, I like what he brings to the judge's table. He's a little too kinetic, but I always think he has great contributions and really good constructive criticism.
- Adam just wrapped
Bedtime Stories with
Adam Sandler and managed to cast two dancers in the film Travis and Lacey.
- Anyone who is interested in dance should check out
Cyd Charisse's body of work. She just passed away but her work lives on in films like
Singin' in the Rain,
Do you agree with Adam that Cat looked Cat-tastic tonight? As first I wasn't loving her outfit but it definitely grew on me. More importantly, what did you think of the performances? Did you agree with the judge's critiques? Mine? I can't wait to read your comments.
See you back here tomorrow for the results.
