Lovable blue gnomes---only three apples high---live an idyllic existence in a medieval forest, though their happiness is threatened by the wicked wizard Gargamel. `The Smurfs' can be traced back to 1958, when Belgian cartoonist Pierre `Peyo' Culliford created the mushroom-dwelling creatures. They debuted on American toy shelves in the late-1970s before appearing on NBC's Saturday-morning schedule. The show was a huge success, expanding from an hour to 90 minutes in 1982 and garnering two Emmys.

Smurfing news just in — your favorite Saturday morning cartoon from the '80s is making its way to the big screen. According to Variety, Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation are creating a live-action/animated Smurf film. In negotiations to write the screenplay are none other than David Stem and David Weiss, who also penned the second and third installments in the Shrek franchise. Sony obtained film rights to the blue-colored characters from Lafig Belgium via Jordan Kerner (Charlotte's Web), who is producing.Though most of us remember the cartoon as the long running Hanna-Barbera series, the tiny blue residents of Smurf Village were a part of a franchise that encompassed the world for decades (who wasn't obsessed with Smurfs on Ice?). Somehow a magic flute has gotten out of Smurfland and into the hands of young practical joker Peewit and the good knight Johan. That isn't so bad...but when Peewit loses the flute to the sinister Oily McCreep, the Smurfs have to come to the rescue!Legendary TV exec Fred Silverman had the knack of getting great ideas for a show from just about anywhere...including his own daughter's Smurf doll! Realizing that this line of toys represented an enormously popular world, that could make an excellent kid cartoon, Silverman put together a deal which would bring the now-classic animated series out near the end of his three-year stint as President and CEO of NBC. In 1981 NBC and Hanna-Barbera debuted the Saturday morning cartoon version of The Smurfs, and it quickly became a huge success.
