Young ones were charmed with stories told by kindly Smilin' Ed McConnell and skits performed by comical puppet characters, the most popular of which was Froggy the Gremlin, a frog dressed in a tux who was greeted by wildly cheering kids. The series, which began on radio in 1929 under the sponsorship of the Buster Brown shoe company, was also known as `Smilin' Ed McConnell and His Buster Brown Gang.' After McConnell's death in 1954, Andy Devine came aboard and the show was renamed `Andy's Gang.'
