ABC Commits More Murder as NBC's Bee Gets Stung

Women's Murder Club by Vivian Zink/ABC

ABC has ordered three more scripts for Women's Murder Club, and not a moment too soon, given that a writers' strike could start as early as tomorrow. Cavemen and Big Shots are now the only new ABC series for which the net hasn't ordered additional episodes.... That's gotta sting: NBC has pulled The Singing Bee from its November-sweeps lineup and replaced it on Tuesday nights with supersized episodes of The Biggest Loser. — Ben Katner read more

I was surprised to hear that ...

Question: I was surprised to hear that after one good showing of The Singing Bee, NBC would give it a fall spot. This comes from the new president of NBC, who was supposed to be hired to get the network out of last place. The ratings keep going down each week. Why wouldn't NBC wait until the end of the summer tryout to make a decision about the fall? It seems pretty premature and makes NBC look pretty foolish, especially if they go ahead and cancel it after the first few shows in the fall. With this kind of new leadership, NBC will always keep looking up. Answer: A little perspective here. While there's no question the instant pickup was recklessly (and in retrospect, foolishly) hasty, look at the bigger picture. The impetus behind this move was to get the promising new show Chuck off of Tuesdays, where it would face stiff competition in House (not to mention CW's similarly humorous action-comedy Reaper), and move it to Mondays as a strong lead-in to Heroes. To fill this hole on ... read more

Fox: Follow the Bouncing Bones

David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel in Bones by Art Streiber/Fox

In recent years the Fox network has ended each season on such a high (thanks to hot franchises like American Idol, 24 and House) that we almost forget how badly Fox struggles to get traction in the fall.Perhaps sensing another fall disaster in the making, with two dark new dramas threatening to drag down its Monday and Tuesday lineups, Fox has rejiggered its fall lineup by postponing the murky New Amsterdam (about an immortal detective), originally intended for Tuesdays at 8 pm/ET, until midseason. In its place goes Bones, shifting from a tough Wednesday slot (9/8c) where this appealing procedural would have faced CBS' Criminal Minds, ABC's high-profile Grey's Anatomy spin-off Private Practice, NBC's Bionic Woman and CW’s Gossip Girl. This makes Tuesday a pretty powerful night for Fox, with the often underappreciated Bones leading into the mega-hit House. Given the level of angst I tend to hear from Bones fans who can't help themselves from expecting the worst, having been burne... read more

Monday's Singing Bee for Ladies Only

Monday's episode of NBC's The Singing Bee, titled "Girl Power," will pay lip service to, as host Joey Fatone puts it, "girl groups, girl singers and… my favorite subject — girls." Why, oh why do I just know that despite the evening's theme, the show still isn't going to pay its due respect to the one and only Martika? Anyway, all the buzz about Bee seems to be paying off. It retained much of the audience from its America's Got Talent lead-in on Tuesday — Talent drew 10.7 million viewers for a 3.1 rating and a 10 share in adults 18-49, Bee stung 9.8 million for a 3.2 rating and a 9 share — and won its time slot for the Peacock. read more
