  • As I enjoy The Wire and ... | Matt Roush | 10/20/2006
Question: As I enjoy The Wire and Weeds, I have noticed that dramas on cable have overtaken dramas on network TV in terms of quality. Sure, there are shows like 24, Lost and Grey's Anatomy, but in my opinion they pale in comparison to Weeds, The Wire, The Sopranos, Battlestar Galactica, Rescue Me, The Shield, Deadwood, etc. Maybe it's because cable offers greater freedom to the writers, but I think it's because of the 13 episodes per season in a cable drama compared to 22 (or more) episodes for... read more
  • Hope Davis: Will Six Degrees' Laura Bust Her Pal's Fiancé? | Today's News: Our Take | 10/12/2006
Having made a name for herself in movies such as American Splendor and About Schmidt, Hope Davis is one of the many film stars who found herself on the small screen this season. She plays the widow of an Iraq-war correspondent in J.J. Abrams' latest series, Six Degrees — also starring big-screen vets Campbell Scott, Bridget Moynahan and Erika Christensen, and concerning six New Yorkers whose lives are interconnected (Thursdays at 10 pm/ET on ABC). Last week, her character, Laura, made two... read more

Question: I am curious if you know which Stephen King book the Others were reading at the beginning of the Lost season opener?Answer: It was Carrie. read more
  • So… what's the Battlestar ... | Today's News: Our Take | 10/11/2006
Question: So… what's the Battlestar prattle you alluded to in last week's AA?Answer: File this under frakelicious casting news: We're finally going to meet the woman who birthed Apollo. Lucinda Jenney (24, The Shield) has been cast as Commander Adama's late wife in a flashback-heavy episode airing later this season. I'm told the episode sheds light on their marriage and delves into how Bill struggled to balance family with his military career. Why don't we just call it what it is: Edward James... read more
  • New Season Fallout: Changes Everywhere | Matt Roush | 10/6/2006
Didn’t take long for the first shoes to drop this season, did it? Let’s analyze the moves network by network.CBS We start here because CBS has wielded the cancellation ax first, dropping the Sopranos-lite caper Smith immediately from the otherwise successful Tuesday lineup. Strike one for this season’s new wave of serialized dramas. Crime-drama repeats (what else?) will occupy its slot starting this Tuesday.I’m not terribly surprised. Though there was some buzz for the show... read more
  • I have a laundry list of ... | Matt Roush | 8/28/2006
Question: I have a laundry list of questions about summer viewing: Is Life on Mars going to have a second season, or was it a one-off? (I'm scared to death of the American remake — I'm expecting Starsky & Hutch.) I was disappointed to hear about the bad ratings of Brotherhood — it's too good to be ignored. If there is no second season, will we be left hanging, or does the first series come to some sort of resolution? I know it's early, but what is the likelihood of Vanished making... read more
  • You saw the season premiere ... | Today's News: Our Take | 8/9/2006
Question: You saw the season premiere of The Shield? You lucky man! In fact, I think I hate you. Give up some more goods, or I will sic my Maltese on you.Answer: Well, in addition to the memorable Mackey-Kavanaugh run-in that I told you about last week, Corrine and new mama Danny also get into a little verbal tussle that turns real ugly real fast. And the haunting Johnny Cash track "Hurt" that FX featured in its Shield promos last year gets used to perfection in a montage that caps the... read more
  • Thank god for FX and its ... | Today's News: Our Take | 8/2/2006
Question: Thank god for FX and its Famke-love. Any news on what Famke Janssen's character will be on The Shield? Answer: As I mentioned in Press Tour Diary: Fox Day Two, it's Franka Potente, not Famke Janssen, who's doing The Shield. And she's playing the wife of an Armenian mob boss. BTW, FX screened the sixth-season premiere for critics at press tour, and I'm not overselling it when I say it's a step up from brilliant. There's a scene between Forest Whitaker and Michael Chiklis outside... read more
  • Do you think that CBS' Smith ... | Matt Roush | 7/21/2006
Question: Do you think that CBS' Smith will last the whole season? Answer: Hard for me to say. But if you're asking me if it should last the season, I'm still at a loss. The pilot (from John Wells) is extremely well made, introducing us to a glamorous team of criminals plotting an elaborate heist that goes slightly awry, hinting at repercussions and complications to come. My problem with the show is that, unlike morally challenging shows like The Shield and The Sopranos, there's not much... read more
  • Is this the end of the HBO ... | Matt Roush | 7/21/2006
Question: Is this the end of the HBO dynasty? I mean, HBO really set the standard for cable programming by having a small lineup of great shows and showcasing them one or two at a time (a formula that FX is using quite successfully). Now I'm wondering if it has fallen asleep at the wheel. While Showtime and FX are preparing shows such as Rescue Me, The Shield, Weeds and Sleeper Cell, HBO seems to be canceling a show every other month. Am I paranoid, or does the channel have some sort of... read more
  • I know you are really busy at ... | Matt Roush | 7/21/2006
Question: I know you are really busy at the press tour (thanks for all the detailed Dispatches), but I was just wondering if you might want to comment on the TV Week Critics Poll. Do you agree or disagree with any specific shows in the top 25? Actually, I was really wondering if you might want to comment on the fact that CBS did not have a single show in the top 25. What does that say about the American public, and CBS for that matter, that America's No. 1 network (a title they often shove down... read more
  • Finally Denis Leary gets his ... | Matt Roush | 7/14/2006
Question: Finally Denis Leary gets his long-overdue nomination for his terrific performance on Rescue Me! I am now torn between whether I want Denis (a hometown favorite for me) to win or Kiefer Sutherland, who so rightly deserves this as well. I guess I will be happy with either, but it's such a hard decision. Let's just hope the Emmy voters don't mess this up. I'll admit that it would be nice to see Martin Sheen finally win, but we must look at this past season, and both Kiefer and Denis had... read more
  • I am writing in response to a ... | Matt Roush | 6/30/2006
Question: I am writing in response to a letter posted in your 6/26 column concerning Rescue Me. While I found Tommy's attack on Janet upsetting, I also feel you have to remember everything that Tommy has gone through recently: his son's death rite, his wife blaming him for it, his own brother sleeping with his wife, his father's declining health and his own attempts to stay off booze and cigarettes. While I am not saying this is an excuse, I am simply pointing out that the man has hit his... read more
  • Blade Takes a Bite Out of TV | Today's News: Our Take | 6/28/2006
Producer/writer David S. Goyer is hotter than a solar flash on the big screen these days. While the veteran comic-book (Justice Society of America) and sci-fi/horror-film scribe (Batman Begins, Dark City) is currently working on, among other projects, big-screen takes on The Flash and Ghost Rider, it' read more
  • My husband is driving me ... | Today's News: Our Take | 6/28/2006
Question: My husband is driving me crazy. When does the new season for The Shield begin? Answer: Those mean people at FX are making us wait until early '07, if you can believe it. And here's a major spoiler that is sure to make Mackey's (and Michael Chiklis') day: Forest Whitaker's Kavanaugh is being written out in the third episode. read more
  • I didn't want to be the one ... | Matt Roush | 6/23/2006
Question: I didn't want to be the one to start it, but since Jennifer opened it with the Lauren Graham question, let's talk Emmys. What do you think will be the five nominees for the outstanding-drama-series category? Judging by quality, ratings, buzz and past nominations/wins, 24, Lost and The Sopranos are definitely going to be nominated. Six Feet Under is thankfully out of the fray, and The West Wing faded this season, which opens up two spots. Since it's the Emmys, I have no doubt in my... read more
  • Major Shield News | Today's News: Our Take | 6/2/2006
The Shield has been greenlit for a sixth season. No one at FX will confirm, but very reliable sources say series creator Shawn Ryan has decided there's enough creative juice left to carry on for one more season. The show is currently in production on Season 5's final 10 episodes, slated to debut in early '07. In other FX news, I'm told the cable net has made a 13-episode commitment to Courteney Cox's tabloid-set comedy Dirt. We're happy about this. Why are we happy about this? Because I read... read more
  • I was quite pleased with the ... | Today's News: Our Take | 5/31/2006
Question: I was quite pleased with the choices for the Dream Emmy Ballot. I especially loved all the Scrubs nominees! You said Donald Faison was one of your non-negotiables. Who else was non-negotiable? Answer: I would have fought to the death for Battlestar Galactica, The Shield, Katherine Heigl and Forest Whitaker, but, luckily, I didn't have to. Matt Roush and I have very similar taste, with the exception of Unan1mous read more
  • Our Dream Emmy Ballot | Today's News: Our Take | 5/24/2006
This could be the year the Emmys finally get it right. For the first time ever, a blue-ribbon panel will play a key role in determining who gets nominated in the major categories. The goal? To even the playing field between stalwarts like The West Wing and Will & Grace and smaller shows like Battlestar Galactica and Gilmore Girls. While we at TV Guide applaud such an approach, we can't leave anything to chance. That's why for the fifth year running, we present you with who we think should... read more

Premise: A corrupt and brutal L.A. detective runs an elite squad by his own rules in a neighborhood ravaged by drugs and gangs. Unusually gritty and graphically violent, but seldom less than riveting, 'The Shield' gets its biggest jolt from the breakout performance by Michael Chiklis as the complex and volatile Vic Mackey. The drama made Emmy history when he won for Lead Actor in a Drama in 2002, the first such win for a basic-cable series.
