  • Can I get some scoop on The ... | Today's News: Our Take | 10/17/2007
Question: Can I get some scoop on The Shield, please? I'll be your best friend! Answer: You know how Shane kidnapped Mackey's wife and daughter in the finale? Well, Mackey's going to return the favor in the season premiere. read more
  • I had a chance to watch the ... | Matt Roush | 10/15/2007
Question: I had a chance to watch the pilots for both Moonlight and Reaper. I'm a big Supernatural fan, and these ghost/vampire genre shows, when done well, are a lot of fun. To me, one of these shows demonstrates how you do it well, and one demonstrates how you do it badly. Let's start with the good: I really enjoy Reaper. The stars are likable, the writing is fun, and it genuinely made me laugh. It obviously isn't taking itself too seriously, but the effects are... read more
  • I've been watching episodes ... | Matt Roush | 9/21/2007
Question: I've been watching episodes of Crossing Jordan on A&E for a few weeks now and find it pretty entertaining, so I looked up the date of the new season premiere and read that NBC had canceled it. Just like that, on a cliff-hanger? I know it's been on for six seasons, but what bothers me most is how it ended. The finale didn't feel like a series finale. The producers clearly didn't know they weren't getting another season. Are the rumors of its cancellation true? If so, how... read more

TNT's Saving Grace ended its freshman season on Monday with a series low of 4.2 million viewers.... The Shield creator Shawn Ryan has inked a new three-year deal with 20th Century Fox. • Love your columns, and I ... | Matt Roush | 9/14/2007
Question: Love your columns, and I wanted your insight on something. In the next year, The Shield, The Wire and Battlestar Galactica all begin their final seasons. As three of the greatest television series of all time come to an end around the same time, which do you think will pack the biggest punch in its last episodes? Answer: Love the question, but it's impossible to know in advance which will knock us out the most, and it's risky playing one against the other in gauging their impact as... read more
  • Is it true they are going to ... | Matt Roush | 9/7/2007
Question: Is it true they are going to split the Battlestar Galactica season up so that we won't have a conclusion until 2009? To quote Baltar, "I can't physically take that!" Please find out the truth. Answer: The truth, at least as far as I can get anyone at the Sci Fi Channel to confirm at this point, is that no decision has officially been made yet on the scheduling of the final season. But I got a handful of panicked questions about this rumor that Battlestar will be split... read more
  • Big fan of your stuff, keep ... | Matt Roush | 9/3/2007
Question: Big fan of your stuff, keep up the good work. A quick question about The Shield: I am aware that next year's final season will consist of 13 episodes, but do you happen to know when the season will begin? I assume it will follow the trend of past years and begin in March. Have you heard anything to the contrary? Answer: No set date announced yet, but I would think either January or March/April is likely, depending on how FX juggles its other assets in those months, including the... read more
  • Can you explain why the ... | Matt Roush | 8/27/2007
Question: Can you explain why the screen is blacked out during the opening credits of The Closer? Do they think that we don't know who the stars are? They'll be showing a murder scene, for example, and then black it out for a few seconds to show the name of a cast member. They also do this on The Shield. I find it most annoying and I bet other viewers do as well. Answer: Pure and simple, it's a stylistic choice. I happen to like the way The Closer and The Shield run the credits throughout... read more
  • Damages is fascinating and ... | Matt Roush | 8/20/2007
Question: Damages is fascinating and does a terrific job at providing those "out of the blue" moments that grab your attention. But the show is so nasty and cynical. I realize it is not the scope of the show, but couldn't they have put some nice, enjoyable characters in the show? It's like watching the Wicked Stepsister ruin everyone's lives. Normally, I like dark. I love the old Irish folk songs where the good person is screwed at the end. Love The Shield. But this show may not be a... read more

  • I really like Saving Grace, ... | Matt Roush | 8/13/2007
Question: I really like Saving Grace, but... the "s--t" word needs to go or at least be reduced in frequency. I didn't count how many times it was said in the first episode (probably at least 15 times), but it was way too much. The second episode they said it 21 times, and at least five or six times within the first five minutes. Hey, not that I don't use that word or even the f word a lot, but on network/cable TV, I feel it is a little much. This isn't HBO or Showtime. I'm pretty... read more
  • I know that we've all ... | Matt Roush | 8/10/2007
Question: I know that we've all complained about how bad the Emmy nominations are from year to year, but seriously, if Glenn Close doesn't win best actress in a drama next year, I think they should abolish the Emmys forever. I was thoroughly enamored with her performance on The Shield (pretty impressive to make an already fantastic show even better!), but what she's doing on Damages is beyond me. She is simply mesmerizing! You can't take your eyes off her. Sometimes it feels like she's acting... read more
  • In the Works: The Contender Fights On, and More | Today's News: Our Take | 8/7/2007
ESPN on Sept. 4 will reenter the ring with a third round of The Contender, the first to feature full and uncut fights on ESPN2. Sugar Ray Leonard will again host, says the Reporter.... CBS has given a greenlight to the pilots Worst Week (a half-hour comedy based on the U.K.'s The Worst Week of My Life, and to be penned/exec-produced by Scrubs' Matt Tarses), as well as a medical drama from Kasi Lemmons (Talk to Me) and Mark Gordon (Grey's Anatomy).... • Like most television fans, I ... | Matt Roush | 7/23/2007
Question: Like most television fans, I was disappointed that Friday Night Lights, Battlestar Galactica, The Shield, Lost and The Wire — not to mention the many fine actors and actresses that populate these shows — didn't garner a sniff of recognition from voters come Emmy time. But I wasn't as disappointed or surprised as many other people I've talked with, simply because I have come to expect little from the voters. What does it say about the Emmys when everyone, from casual fans to... read more
  • I like to think I'm an ... | Matt Roush | 7/20/2007
Question: I like to think I'm an educated TV viewer. I live for smart shows like The Wire, Lost, Battlestar Galactica and The Shield. Shows that don't spoon-feed you plot but rather force you to pay attention and think. But after the latest episode of John from Cincinnati, I am at a complete loss. This show is either an epic-level disaster or pure genius, and I have no idea which it is. For the first five episodes, I felt like one of the characters in the show — I was annoyed and unhappy, I had... read more
  • Big Names Bold Roles Hot Shows Glenn Close does Damages while Holly Hunter finds her Saving Gra | Matt Roush | 7/18/2007
Patty Hewes loves red meat. "I'm thinking steak," declares the glamorously ruthless litigator, played to the cunning Cruella De Lawyer hilt by Glenn Close in FX's twisted new legal thriller Damages. When told her naive young protégée is also a carnivore, Patty approves: "Atta girl." Meaty roles like Patty Hewes — and Saving Grace's Grace Hanadarko, a booze-swilling Oklahoma detective on the fast track to self-destruction — have brought dazzling stars with the Tony and... read more
  • Kevin Reilly: From NBC to Fox in Six Weeks | Matt Roush | 7/9/2007
Wow, that didn’t take long.It hasn’t even been two months (May 14, to be exact) since Kevin Reilly stood astride the Radio City Music Hall stage as NBC’s Entertainment president to present the Peacock’s fall lineup to advertisers at the upfront. That was then, this is now.In the interim, Reilly was bounced by NBC brass in favor of wunderkind agent-turned-producer Ben Silverman. And Reilly, as rumored, has rebounded with unusual agility and speed at Fox, where he is being... read more
  • Friday Night Lights on Emmy Short List? | Matt Roush | 7/2/2007
Well, this is good news to come home to. (Thanks, by the way, to all the well-wishers who e-mailed gracious greetings during my time off. Can't recommend Paris highly enough, even during an unseasonably chilly rainy spell.)If the reporting on TheEnvelope.com site is accurate, the top-10 drama finalists at this intermediate stage of the Emmy nominations includes eternal NBC underdog Friday Night Lights—which could use some good news, seeing as how NBC yanked its summer repeats for now.... read more
  • I know that The Shield's ... | Today's News: Our Take | 6/20/2007
Question: I know that The Shield's season just ended, but do you have any scoop on what we can expect in the final season?Answer: They're bringing in a new female ICE cop in her mid-thirties who is tough and attractive. THIS JUST IN: The role's been cast! Sources confirm that X-Files alum Laurie Holden (she played Mulder's duplicitous mole, Marita) has landed the part. read more
  • Critic's Notebook: Shield finale, Jericho Revival | Matt Roush | 6/6/2007
In all of the hubbub being made over anticipating Sunday’s final episode ever of The Sopranos, it seems unfair to let The Shield end its penultimate season without some fanfare. As I noted when both shows returned within a week of each other in April, these dark dramas are among TV’s best. As their seasons unfolded, they lived up to my expectations. Quoting myself at the time: “The Shield is first-rate pulp fiction, blisteringly intense as it grabs you by the throat. The Sopranos... read more

Premise: A corrupt and brutal L.A. detective runs an elite squad by his own rules in a neighborhood ravaged by drugs and gangs. Unusually gritty and graphically violent, but seldom less than riveting, 'The Shield' gets its biggest jolt from the breakout performance by Michael Chiklis as the complex and volatile Vic Mackey. The drama made Emmy history when he won for Lead Actor in a Drama in 2002, the first such win for a basic-cable series.
