A landmark series set in an ethnically diverse urban neighborhood where every day is a sunny one. It features songs, skits, animation and, of course, Muppets to teach preschoolers basic educational and social concepts. A public-television gem that's older than PBS itself, `Sesame Street' debuted in 1969 on National Educational Television. Since that time, this influential show has won more Emmys than any other in TV history (more than 90 at last count) and can be seen in more than 140 countries.
  • Sopranos Stop by Sesame Street | Today's Top Videos | 12/21/2007
The Sopranos Hit Up Sesame StreetLeave it to Bert and Ernie to get all Hollywood on us. Our favorite puppet duo has moved behind the camera to direct their own sketches, and guess who they managed to get to play their parts? The Sopranos' Tony Sirico and Steve Schirripa. How can you resist seeing Paulie Walnuts with a bushy unibrow and Bobby Bacala with a tri-colored, striped sweater? We can just hear it now: “Ey, Ernie, you talkin’ to me?” Hmm...wonder what their rendition of “Rubber Duckie” would be like. • Can You Tell Me How to Get ... | Around the Tube | 11/21/2007
You've probably seen the ads for the "old school" Sesame Street DVDs of the show's first several seasons. What I didn't know till I slogged through last weekend's NY Times magazine was that these Sesame Street DVDs are labled not appropriate for children. Look, I'm not a parent, but I do have a suggestion for America: toughen up!Watching Cookie Monster go through a bag didn't make me reach for the box of Oreos. And in no way did I think Oscar was a model of mental health. And I never though the street was a slum cause it looked something like an actual street. I'm sure today's kids will be ok with the pre-sweetened Elmo, but I'm glad that I got to have the Blutowskian antics of the original Calle Sesamo. read more
  • Tina Fey Rocks Sesame Street's World (and Vice Versa) | TV Guide Interviews & Features | 8/13/2007
Sesame Street (PBS, 9am/ET) begins its 38th season today with a visit from funny lady Tina Fey, who in a pirate-themed sketch not only displays her comic chops but a talent for singing, which she does in a musical number with Elmo. We spoke to Fey about her appearance on the kiddie fave, as well as the upcoming season of her sitcom 30 Rock. TV Guide: Tell us about landing the Sesame gig. Tina Fey: You get that call and, of course, the answer is immediately "yes." It's such an institution. I ... read more
  • Stop the Presses! Sesame Street's Elmo Isn't Jewish?! | Today's News: Our Take | 7/24/2007
Ben Stiller (voicing an elf named... Stiller) and The Sopranos' Tony Sirico and Steve Schirripa (as a wannabe Bert and Ernie) are but a few of the stars who will help out with Elmo's Christmas Countdown, a one-hour holiday special coming to ABC. Per the Hollywood Reporter, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Ty Pennington, Alicia Keys, Sheryl Crow and Brad Paisley are also set to appear as themselves to perform in musical numbers, while Big Bird, Grover, Oscar, Snuffie and the Count will be representin' for the "I've got someone's hand inside me" set. read more
  • New Sesame Street Features Ray, Fey, Spoof of Grey's | Today's News: Our Take | 6/18/2007
Season 38 of Sesame Street, premiering Aug. 13, will feature a curriculum focusing on early literacy and language skills, PBS announced on Monday. The new batch will also feature Abby Cadabby in all 26 episodes (sounds like someone got a new agent), and kick off each episode with a "Word on the Street," which will be defined throughout the hour. There'll be occasional assists from the likes of Ellen DeGeneres and Jon Stewart.Speaking of famous human faces, guests for the coming season include Tina Fey, Rachael Ray, James Blunt and several New York Jets. Pop-culture spoofs include "Meal or No Meal," "American I," "A's Anatomy" and "GNN" with Anderson Cooper and grouch coanchors Walter Cranky and Dan Rather-Not. OK, that last bit just made me giggle. read more
