seaQuest DSV on NBC

1993, TV Show

Steven Spielberg took an expensive plunge with tales of a 1000-foot research submarine (Deep Submergence Vehicle) helmed by a crusty captain coaxed out of retirement to conduct experiments and patrol underwater colonies in the year 2018. The series had impressive production values and undersea footage (the reported cost was $2 million per episode), but many reviews were harsh and it was fast-forwarded into the future in 1995 as 'seaQuest 2032,' with new cast members (and a new captain).
