Of course, we know this show won't let us care about a patient who is going to have it easy, so it wasn't all sunshine this week as Brian tried to commit suicide on the day of his hospital discharge. I find myself perennially surprised, though, how
Scrubs can take a difficult and controversial topic such as suicide and still make it lighthearted and charming.
Elliot's suicide attempt has to be the funniest version possible. Floating in a lake in her bikini, only to be pulled out by the rowing team after they've beaten her in the head with their oars four times? Wow. Perhaps only she could have topped her lake efforts if she had followed through with putting her head in the oven. Luckily, heat on her head makes her have to pee, so Elliot was spared yet again. Thank goodness.
Suicide wasn't the only controversial issue touched upon this week. There was also the bit where J.D. and Turk were retelling their version of the infamous water-balloon-fight-with-Stacy story. Both J.D. and Turk did their best impressions of black and white speech, but I was a little shocked by J.D.'s version. I was glad Brian called him out on his racist imitation. It did seem a little more extreme than Turk's. Though I loved that they revisited this ongoing debate over whether or not Turk actually slept with Stacy. It's something we've heard referenced several times, and it always makes me smile. Yet another inside joke on this show. The writers give the fans so much credit and often place large nuggets of inside-jokery in a quick scene, which casual viewers might miss. It's almost like these characters are real friends of ours. Well, almost.
And while all this sharing and caring was going on in Private Dancer's room, the janitor was stuck in the hallway holding a fishbowl and waiting to beat J.D. at his own mind games. When the fish, Roger Dorsey, started speaking to the janitor, that's when things got really bad for him. I loved that the way the janitor proved to himself that he was really talking to the fish was to have it hit an angelic note. It really was beautiful, too. I understand why he was so captivated. Here's to Roger's speedy recovery! Hopefully the janitor was able to find some water (though let's pray it wasn't that nasty mop water he's always slopping around).
Other highlights:
- J.D.'s blog entry, "Why Being Really Lonely Is Sometimes Super Awesome." Awww.
- Turk's desperate urge to fart. As someone who recently attended a lengthy beer festival, let me just say that I understand his need to seek relief.
- Kelso's inappropriate but hilarious joke, "Are these boxers made of wool? My weasel's getting heat stroke." Even Carla couldn't keep a straight face on that one.
- J.D.'s new scrubs. I actually didn't like them, but at least it got me wondering how easy the wardrobe department has it on this particular set.
I'd say Carla's bad attempts at humor were another highlight, but, man, were those jokes bad. And not in that so-bad-that-it's-good way, either. Dr. Cox was dead-on when he told her she'd hear crickets if they weren't so uncomfortable themselves. Right on, Perry. Right on.
