Scrubs Episode Recap: "My Finale" Season 8, Episode 18

Is it really over? That's unclear, as ABC is still flirting with the possibility of a rebooted, Zach Braff-free Scrubs for the fall. We probably won't get a definitive answer on the matter until the network's upfronts on May 19, so in the meantime, let's use this space to sound off on the gooey-centered, one-hour finale episode — of whatever variety it might turn out to be.

On his last day at Sacred Heart, J.D. got the closure he so desired. He hugged it out — several times, in fact — with his life partner Turk. He confessed his penny slip-up from the first episode of the series to the Janitor. He even maybe learned his real name (for the record, Glenn Matthews). He moved in with Elliot. "Bambi" had special time with Carla and Jordan. And he finally got the best of Dr. Cox, tricking him into revealing his true feelings: He thinks that J.D. is one of the finest doctors ever to work at the hospital, and he considers him — gasp! — a friend.

At about the 40-minute mark, the episode shifted tones, heading off into arty, tear-jerking territory. As J.D. rounded his last corner, he imagined all the faces he'd experienced through the years, as more than 50 former guest stars — including Tom Cavanagh, Amy Smart, Colin Hay, Kathryn Joosten, Nicole Sullivan and Michael McDonald paid their final respects to Dr. Dorian.

As he exits the hospital for the last time, he imagines his fantasy future, scored to Peter Gabriel's plaintive "Book of Love", which appears as a montage of projected images that scrolls through J.D. and Elliot's wedding, Elliot's pregnancy, a holiday gathering that includes J.D. and Elliot, Turk and Carla, Perry and Jordan and their various children, and the apparent news that J.D.'s son and Turk's daughter get engaged. A quick behind-the-scenes reel later, and it's over. Forever?

What do you think of "My Finale"? Did you get closure or do you still need a hug? Are you hoping that ABC will green-light a ninth season of Scrubs?

Premise: An engaging (and periodically serious) look at hospital work through the eyes of a young intern, coping with unusual challenges presented by colleagues as well as patients. The show is a smart mix of humor and social commentary, and has had a diverse lineup of guest stars, including Colin Hay of Men at Work, Brendan Fraser, Dick Van Dyke and, in one of his rare TV appearances since he left full-time work because of Parkinson's disease, Michael J. Fox.
