Season 13, Episode 6 Deep Crisis
First Aired: January 28, 2003
In this episode, host Alan Alda assesses “the future of the ocean's long-distance travelers”: salmon and bluefin tuna. It's up in the air. Alda looks at why salmon stocks in Maine and the Columbia and Snake Rivers on the west coast have been depleted. On the Columbia, extensive protection mechanisms have been installed at the Army Corps of Engineers' McNary Dam. In Maine, salmon are up against the effects of acid rain. As for tuna, it's not known just how depleted their stocks are, so Molly Lutcavage is counting and tagging them in the Atlantic.
