Episode Detail: On the Ball - Scientific American Frontiers

Host Alan Alda explores how scientists and technology are helping athletes. At Canada's University of Calgary, Joan Vickers is interested in where basketball and hockey players “look when they're playing.” At Arizona State University, Debbie Crews puts Alda's brain “on-line” for a putting session with the LPGA's Tina Tombs. At Boston's Fenway Park, Alda is shown technology that can help umpires tell balls from strikes (no, it's not eyeglasses). And on France's Cote d'Azur he meets a diver who can hold his breath for seven minutes.

Premise: Science, technology and nature are examined with insight, humor and an eye on the practical, with smartly paced reports on such subjects as the big-bang theory, robots, the relationship between stress and illness, and whether we are alone in the universe. There's a good deal of fascinating information, but as long-time host Alan Alda notes in one episode, `big questions don't always have answers.'
