The Break-Up Season 1, Episode 9

Samantha Who kicked off this week with a simple flower delivery. Although there was no sign of him in last week's episode, apparently Sam and Kevin are still dating and it's gotten to the point where Sam is ready to take that next step. As we've seen in her previous attempt to sleep with a man, Sam's got some much to learn about the art of seduction before she could take that plunge. When she turns to Dena for some advice on her big night, it's obvious that Dena is pretty clueless on the subject as well when she suggests Sam "make her carpet match the drapes" by making her bra match her panties. Upon visiting Todd to pick up some of her belongings, Sam learns that Todd's new girlfriend has a drawer of stuff at the apartment and he explains that the carpet/drapes phrase doesn't mean what she thinks it does. Nonetheless, Sam finally has her big moment with Kevin and when all is said and done she thinks she's fallen in love. And as we've come to expect from this show, it doesn't end well. The next day, a giddy Sam returns home announcing to the world that she's in love. Her mom is nothing but supportive while Andrea warns that it's just a case of post-sex euphoria and that Sam should move on before she gets too involved. Meanwhile, Sam's assistant was taking full advantage of her boss' kindness and slacking on her duties at the office. After spending another night with Kevin, Sam suggests she get her own drawer at his place and he half-heartedly agrees. When Sam goes over to Todd's to pick up more of her stuff, he also expresses concern that Sam might be moving too fast in her first relationship. She ignores Todd's friendly advice and on a date with Kevin later in the night, he dumps her. Depressed and confused, Sam returns to work the next morning unable to stop crying. She starts working on a collage of all the things she and Kevin could have done together but before she could send it to him, Andrea stops her and takes her home to drown her sorrows in a bottle of wine. Though Sam was reluctant at first because she was supposedly in AA, her assistant informs her that her meetings were court-ordered and she's not actually an alcoholic. Bring on the booze! Later on, we see drunk Samantha sitting around with her friends and mother while listening to Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive on repeat. As they discussed Sam's failed relationship, the conversation shifted to Sam claiming that she is unlovable and she began questioning "Who could love a girl with head problems?" Dena offered up Todd as an example. Sam sets out on a journey to Todd's apartment in all her drunken glory. When Sam arrived at the apartment building and began screaming for Todd, Frank the doorman remained unaffected by Sam's actions. As Sam explained that she needed to know if Todd ever loved her, Frank decided to take her to sober up and offer some sagely advice. The two discussed relationships and love and as Frank continued to spew out his words of wisdom, some more of Sam's memory came rushing back. Sam flashed back to her relationship with Todd when he had tried to get her to say those 3 little words. Of course, old Sam never actually told Todd that she loved him and so new Sam set out to let him know how she really felt back then. When she returned to work reflecting on everything she learned about love this week, she found Tracy still slacking off on the job and realized that trying to be girlfriends with her assistant wasn't really working out. For a brief moment, she let old Sam slip out to put Tracy back in her place only this time she made sure to include please and thank you. This week's show was chock full of cliches about love mostly taken from classic songs and Frank the doorman's screenplay. It was surprising to see that Andrea was kind of right on with her advice to Sam for a change. But I guess when it comes to sex Andrea would be the best person to talk to over Dena and Regina. I loved that we got to see more from Sam's assistant though many of you didn't really like her in earlier episodes. I'm hoping she continues to grow as a character like the rest of the group has because I can definitely see her as nice addition to the crew. And again, I like that Sam's confession to loving Todd didn't lead to her trying to win hi back right away. As I've said before, I'll be happy for as long as they drag that out. It was good to have Frank back though I prefer him when he's cracking one-liners over what he did this week. I'm so glad this show hasn't run out of episodes yet! Memorable Moments: -The opening scene with Sam's assistant Tracy: "I know that I used to be someone that you had to be afraid of...as did the mailroom people, and the homeless, cats, some clergy." "Garbage flowers!" -Andrea trying to convince Sam that Kevin is a gay lumberjack: "Sweetie, my brother is respectful and he moved to Amsterdam to marry his respectful friend Jay." -Dena's sex advice -Sam and Todd discussing their "friendship" -Sam learning from Tracy that she's not an alcoholic but rather a judge forced her into AA when she got drunk before a flight upon learning she had to fly coach: "You even made me fly with you so I can serve you drinks like you were in first class!" Favorite line of the episode: Sam's reaction to Frank's advice on love: "Oh my God! You speak the words of Gloria!" show less
