"The Job" Season 1, Episode 2

After waking up from a coma in last week's premiere, this week Samantha continued her quest to figure out who she is. While the people around her were eager to make up for lost time, Samantha's main priority was to refamiliarize herself with the daily routine she kept before the accident. It's too bad she can't remember what she does for a living. Before she could begin to figure out where she works, Samantha had an appointment with what she was expecting to be a neurologist. She was mortified to learn that her appointment was actually with a plastic surgeon to make her boobs bigger, an appointment she had made before her accident. After randomly bumping into Andrea near the doctor's office, Sam discovered her best friend is also a coworker and she just made perfect timing for her first day back on the job as vice president of something. Still having no clue what exactly her job entailed, Samantha had to pretend to have her full memory and follow along with a lie (thanks to Andrea) that her time off was spent in a rehab facility. I guess that's more acceptable in her cutthroat industry than a case of amnesia. Samantha was also reintroduced to her assistant, whom old Samantha treated like a doormat. Before she could get any info from her assistant, she's dragged into a meeting where she learns she works for a real-estate company whose business practices are pretty questionable. It's the type of company that tears down a church to put up something more profitable like a mini-mall. Disgusted by her career choice, Samantha went out to let off some steam and contemplate her next move. Dina reminded her that her life is a blank slate and that she can do anything with it. That is, until the bill comes and her credit card gets declined. Looks like the 180 she tried to pull on her life won't be as easy as she'd hoped with the $30,000 in credit card debt she owes. Damn the seductive power of shoes! Suddenly, Andrea's advice to keep her life as is might be her only option. While trying to come up with a way to be satisfied in her current job, Samantha flashed back to life at the office with old Samantha. The flashback reminded her of how her boss makes inappropriate sexual remarks to female employees and she uses this knowledge to save the church and bring about some change in her workplace. Just another day in the life of our favorite amnesiac, Samantha Who?. This episode was def. better than the pilot. I'm still loving Jean Smart and even Barry Watson (Todd) is starting to grow on me. His confused look during Sam's Old Me/Future Me speech was great and it'll be fun to watch him deal with an ex that shows no sign of going away. But I do have to agree with the comments made last week about the Dina character. Her one-liners remind me of all the other dimwitted sidekicks we've seen over and over in sitcoms. I am, however, really enjoying the new work aspect of the show. Her boss (played by Rick Hoffman) could be a great addition to an already fun cast of characters. It'll also be fun to watch Samantha's assistant live in constant fear of what her boss might make her do. If this show continues on the path its on, it might soon become my favorite new comedy of the season. Memorable moments: " Mama Newly saying "I mean if we're not going to get to know each other again... what was the point of getting hit by that car?" and later trying to convince Samantha how much she loves puzzles " Frank the doorman giving Samantha style advice by quoting Coco Chanel: "When accessorizing, women should look in the mirror and remove one thing... for you it was always your dignity." " Samantha wanting to help the little people and Andrea's response: "What little people? Dwarves? They don't need your help!" " Samantha accidentally forcing her diabetic assistant to eat birthday cake in an attempt to be a kinder, gentler boss " Samantha's breakdown over having to work to pay off her bills " Best line of the night: "How am I supposed to start fresh when my past keeps reaching into my future and pulling me into my present?" show less
