Of all the fantastical things TV brings into our lives, nothing indulges the imagination quite like cartoons. Whether timely (South Park) or timeless (Looney Tunes), animation can truly take us anywhere. The rules — and the budgets — of conventional television don't apply. In short, we just can't help being drawn to them. In honor of TV Guide Magazine's 60th anniversary, we present our list of the best and, often quite literally, the brightest:
Joseph Barbera, half of the Hanna-Barbera animation team that gave us the misadventures of Tom and Jerry, Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo and so many other memorable charcters, died on Monday of natural causes. He was 95. See Reuters for the full obit.... Chris Hayward, an Emmy-winning writer who helped develop characters for the Rocky and His Friends TV show, died of cancer on Nov. 20. He was 81.
Per Variety, DreamWorks Animation is developing a CGI feature based on Mr. Peabody & Sherman, the time-traveling duo that first boarded their WABAC time machine in 1959, as part of the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon series. The maiden theatrical voyage for the genius dog and his "pet boy" ? boy, did this item suddenly adopt inappropriately homoerotic undertones ? will be helmed by Rob Minkoff (The Lion King, Stuart Little).
