'Tooning Out: Yogi Bear's Creator Dead at 95

Joseph Barbera, half of the Hanna-Barbera animation team that gave us the misadventures of Tom and Jerry, Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo and so many other memorable charcters, died on Monday of natural causes. He was 95. See Reuters for the full obit.... Chris Hayward, an Emmy-winning writer who helped develop characters for the Rocky and His Friends TV show, died of cancer on Nov. 20. Mr. Peabody Dogs the Big Screen

Per Variety, DreamWorks Animation is developing a CGI feature based on Mr. Peabody & Sherman, the time-traveling duo that first boarded their WABAC time machine in 1959, as part of the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon series. The maiden theatrical voyage for the genius dog and his "pet boy" ? boy, did this item suddenly adopt inappropriately homoerotic undertones ? will be helmed by Rob Minkoff (The Lion King, Stuart Little). read more

Premise: Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle Moose starred in this animated series, thwarting the evildoings of Mr. Big, Boris and Natasha. Bullwinkle's running gag was his inability to pull a rabbit out of a hat, conjuring up various gruesome creatures instead. Other segments in the series included `Fractured Fairy Tales,' `Bullwinkle's Corner' and `Mr. Peabody & Sherman.'
