Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live
11:29/10:29c NBC
The topical sketch show continues its run of live episodes as Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes his SNL hosting debut. The actor is hot off a nuanced, acclaimed performance in the film (500) Days of Summer as well as his movie directorial debut with his short film Sparks, which he wrote and produced and for which he scored the music. Speaking of music, it'll be "too much" when the alt-rocking jam collective Dave Matthews Band hits the music stage.

A Christmas favorite receives a Halloween makeover in this episode from 2007, as four renowned pastry chefs build haunted gingerbread creations, ranging from spooky houses to a slime-filled cave and even a Spanish galleon manned by skeleton soldiers. Let's just hope that these edible works of art taste a lot sweeter than they look.

America's Most Wanted

America's Most Wanted
9/8c Fox
Crimes against children have always been a particular focus on America's Most Wanted, and its 23rd season opens with the searchlight out for two suspected Texas predators. One, a Honduran-born woman named Berny Figueroa, is charged with killing a 2-year-old Brenham, Texas, girl she was babysitting in March 2008. The other case is much older: the 1990 abduction and sexual assault of an 8-year-old. Thankfully, victim Jennifer Schuett lived to tell about it, and she joins Walsh to do so tonight.

Just an FYI about the changes ...

Question: Just an FYI about the changes you recently mentioned on BBC America's Robin Hood series. [Spoiler alert] Actually, killing off "Robin Hood" isn't new on on a British TV series. It was done 25-odd years ago on Robin of Sherwood. Michael Praed played the character in the first season, with Robin Hood dying in the final episode and Jason Connery taking over for the subsequent seasons. It was all handled very neatly, since "Robin Hood" was basically the name given to the mythic hero, and if something happened to him, someone else took up the cause (kind of like Zorro). If Doctor Who can make it work using the regeneration myth, I'm sure Robin Hood can come with something plausible, too. Answer: Thanks for the context. How Spartacus to think "we are all Robin Hood." Thankfully, it looks like we have another full season ahead with the actual Robin before we have to worry about the transition ... read more

We just watched the Season 2 ...

Question: We just watched the Season 2 finale of Robin Hood on BBC America. Has the show been canceled? With the killing off of Marian and two other members of the "gang" staying in the Holy Land, it sure seems like that was "goodbye." Any info would be appreciated. We discovered the show during the last two episodes of Season 1 and have been hooked. The show is just a lot of fun to watch and a good "escape" for an hour a week. Sure hate to see such good writing and a good ensemble go away. Again, any help you could provide would be appreciated. Answer: Robin Hood has not been canceled. In fact, a third season is being filmed in Budapest as we speak and will air in 2009. I admit I drifted from this show and was shocked to hear that the story had taken such a tragic twist with Marian being killed. (Methinks I need to get my hands on Season 2 before Season 3 comes around.) BBC America issued a release with some surprising info about next season [Spoiler Alert], describing an "older, ... read more

Wal-Mart Blu-ray Player Promos a Net Cost Under $200 for Father's Day!

Blu-ray Disc

Next week, and just in time for Father's Day (Sunday, June 15th), Wal-Mart is making it much easier to afford a high-definition Blu-ray player! The original standard DVD format went on sale in the United States back in 1997, and consumers quickly shifted over to the new format from VHS. But in 1998, HDTVs went on sale, and every year since then the high definition sets have gained in popularity. But something was missing...hi-def on home video! While DVD was noticeably better than VHS, it was noticeably not-as-good as the hi-def broadcasts of TV shows and films that people could get from cable, satellite and over-the-air HD. Folks clamored for an HD home video format, and by February 2008 the Sony-developed Blu-ray Disc ("BD") format had just won a bitter hi-def format war. But at the time, prices of a BD player started at $400, and typically ran quite a bit higher.Beginning this coming Sunday, June 8th, Wal-Mart is kicking off their newly remodeled electronics departments in their st... read more

Right at this moment we're nearing the end of a mini TV shows on Blu-ray "drought". Did you realize there even WAS one? I am a fan of BBC America's ...

Question: I am a fan of BBC America's Robin Hood (Season 1 ended in the U.S. in June of last year). No word on when Season 2 will return, other than " sometime in 2008." Fans here in the U.S. are asking, "What exactly does that mean?" It's not like there's anything else on the channel right now. I mean, they're showing Dancing with the Stars, for heaven's sake. We've already been there and done that! There has been a dramatic change in programming at this channel, and people are getting upset about it, because they are paying good money to watch it and are just getting U.S. repeats. We are going through enough of that right now due to the writers' strike. Sorry if I get worked up about this, but I thought you might help answer this question of when Robin Hood will make its return. Answer: Your wish has been granted. I checked in with BBC America and was told the second season of Robin Hood will be launched on April 26, with 13 new episodes. Hope that makes up for the intrusion of read more

Matt Roush reviews The Winner with Rob Corddry

Fox, which does well with animated comedies, is overdue a live-action winner. The network may finally have found one in the unlikely form of a balding, bumbling, giggling, socially maladroit perpetual adolescent named Glen Abbott, who is also the season's most original comic hero. Like Glen, The Winner (premiering Mar. 4 at 8:30 pm/ET) is deeply silly, endearingly sweet, a little creepy and undeniably weird. Told in flashbacks to 1994, this is the story of how, at the overripe age of 32, Glen (The Daily Show's Rob Corddry) awakens from life with Mom and Dad at home, where he has cultivated an unnatural fascination with the sitcom Wings. New neighbors provide the catalyst for Glen's long-delayed coming of age, which he tells us in voice-over will lead him to become the richest man in Buffalo.
