The actor-director hosted (and sometimes acted in) this Emmy-winning live anthology series, which mixed originals with adaptations of plays, books, short stories and movies. Many established stars and stars-to-be appeared, including Helen Hayes, James Cagney, Claudette Colbert, Joanne Woodward, James Dean, Peter Falk, Van Heflin, Jack Lemmon, Jane Wyman, Cliff Robertson, Gena Rowlands, Dorothy Gish, Kim Hunter and the host's daughter, Elizabeth Montgomery (in her TV debut).
