This gritty New York-based drama revolves around an alcoholic firefighter who is haunted (quite literally) by ghosts of the family and friends he lost on 9/11. A superbly acted series with a raw energy (and considerable dark humor), it caught fire early and became a hit with critics and viewers in its rookie season.
  • Ask Ausiello | 4/23/2008
Q: I haven't heard anything about Rescue Me in months. Got any news? A: I do! The Chief is alive and well and? appearing on Criminal Minds! Jack McGee will turn up in the season finale as a gruff New York cop who butts heads with a Scotland Yard profiler (Love Actually's Sienna Guillory), both of whom are working with the FBI on a case. I'm told McGee and Guillory will return next season for at least one additional episode. Minds' season finale also features a guest turn by the super-talented . read more

  • Cheers: Lost & Laws to the Rescue | Cheers & Jeers | 3/7/2008
Cheers to the Rescue Me crew for keeping their careers simmering. Andrea Roth was suitably creepy as Juliet's island therapist on Lost, and John Scurti (sans his firefighter 'stache) was surprisingly convincing as a no-nonsense judge on Law & Order. Meanwhile, James McCaffrey sizzles as Julianna Margulies' P.I. paramour on exec producer Denis Leary's new Fox drama Canterbury's Law. With the news that the strike may have pushed Rescue's traditional summer season back until next March, these side gigs could be fans' only lifelines. For more on Lost, check out the new Cheers & Jeers vodcast. read more
  • Has Blu-ray Finally Beat HD DVD for Good? | DVD News and Reviews | 1/9/2008
HBO has joined the parade to Blu-ray after Warner Bros, its distributor, announced on Friday that they were dropping HD-DVD in May 2008. The Warner Bros announcement could be the event that ends the war between high-definition formats. HD-DVD has the exclusive support of Universal and Paramount/DreamWorks, while Blu-ray has Fox/MGM, Warner Bros, Disney, Sony and Lionsgate. Warner Bros, which holds about 20 percent of the market, was a huge win for the Blu-ray group, and leaves Blu-ray with roughly 75 percent of the HD market. The Warner Bros decision has influenced New Line, along with HBO, to make the switch to Blu-ray, but BBC Home Video is bucking the trend and "will evaluate the marketplace before committing to one format" (according to the studio); the studio has four high-definition releases planned for 2008, available on both formats, and has sold more copies of Planet Earth on HD-DVD. Recent notable Blu-ray releases include The Simpsons (Fox), Pirates of the Caribbean: At... read more
  • Writer-producer Denis Leary: I'm Striking Against Myself | WGA Post-Strike Watch: News About Returning Shows | 11/14/2007
It's been good news, bad news for Denis Leary, who, not long after learning that Rescue Me had been picked up for another season, saw the FX series put in limbo by the WGA strike. Explaining the duality he must contend with as a writer and producer on the show he helped create, Leary told TV Guide at Tuesday's 7th Annual BASH for New York's Bravest to Benefit The Leary Firefighters Foundation, "One part of my body isn't talking to the other part. I'm in physical strike against myself."Leary appreciates where the writers are coming from in their asking for compensation in new-media playback — an outlet where producers allege no money is being made to share. "If a guy says, 'I want a raise' or whatever and you say, 'But there's no money here,' the truth of the matter is that if there is nothing, you just bulls--t and go, 'Yeah, sure, I'll give you a raise' — if there is nothing to be had." But since producers are putting up a fight, Leary surmises, "there's a pile of money... read more
