Gallery owner Edward Marber is found murdered on Calton Hill the night after an exhibition. Rebus is assigned to the case and initial suspicions lie with embittered artist and a taxi driver whose cab the victim traveled a few hours before his death.
When small-time criminal Sammy McNally blows his head off at the offices of investment banker Andrew Hammill, Rebus is convinced there's more at stake than a straightforward suicide. Rebus's investigations reveal a connection.
Millionaire philanthropist Gregor Jack is caught during a brothel raid and elsewhere, a woman's body is found beaten to death in a river. Jack claims he simply made a stupid error of judgement in visiting a prostitute.
The Moderator elect of the Church of Scotland is found with his throat cut, naked in a car, and next to a woman passenger in a similar state. The park where their bodies are found is a notorious liaison site for lovers.
