A thought hit me a few weeks ...

Question: A thought hit me a few weeks ago about the show Reba. Perhaps you and other critics should recommend this show to the more conservative viewers. While the humor isn't always top-notch, it is a comedy that has values. The WB should stick it after 7th Heaven instead. To me, Reba is similar to Touched by an Angel in that the show quality isn't always superior, but it does entertain and have values. Would critics such as yourself be able to suggest this show to those viewers seeking shows without the trash found in many popular shows? Answer: Consider that message spread — but by you, not by me. I like Reba well enough, but I wouldn't go out of my way to praise it for its "values." I don't judge shows that way, and I certainly don't intend to skew my opinions for a conservative or nonconservative mind-set — although I guess it's pretty evident that many of us champion shows that push the envelope. Besides, there are those who would no doubt take offense at Reba because it deals ... read more

What do you think of the ...

Question: What do you think of the major changes WB has made to its schedule? Moving Related to the post-7th Heaven slot makes sense, but what are they thinking when they show reruns after One Tree Hill? It seems like that would make a bad situation worse. I'm also confused by the changes on Fridays. I understand trying to find an audience for Twins by moving it after Reba, but why chuck Living with Fran and show a repeat of What I Like About You? As much as I enjoy What I Like About You, it is the network's lowest-rated comedy, and I don't see how showing it twice would help anything at all. Please help me make sense of all of this. Answer: Thanks for reminding me that What I Like About You is still on the air. Who knew? And when it comes to WB's double-runs, you left out Supernatural repeats airing after Charmed on Sundays (replacing Blue Collar TV). The reason for most of these changes is simply a matter of cutting their losses until it's time for another try come mid-season. When a ... read more

ARRIBA, REBA!

After a weeks-long salary dispute between Reba McEntire and 20th Century Fox, the cast and crew of Reba are finally ready to tape the sitcom's much-delayed season premiere. Sources tell Variety the country legend was offered a big raise but was holding out for a big heapin' raise. read more

I never really understood why ...

Question: I never really understood why programmers can't get TV shows to work on Fridays. An obvious obstacle is the fact that people are out on Fridays, but kids aren't. You're clearly not gonna get a Firefly to work on Fridays (why this wasn't obvious to the network is beyond me) but why not just market shows that appeal to tweens on Fridays, like those comedies that used to be on TGIF? Now that I'm a grownup (!!!) with a job I'm usually too pooped to party on Fridays and I figure there should at least be something on for the kids, but all I can find to relax to on a Friday are the few comedies on WB, which always seem to be reruns. Where are the rest of the networks? And while you're at it, why don't movies premiere on the movie channels on Fridays? Seems more people would be home on a Friday than on a Saturday. Answer: You make some interesting points, but there was a big argument when Joan of Arcadia was canceled, in part because it skewed very old, that kids in fact aren't home ... read more

Desperate Stud Smooches Reba!

This week, WB's Reba gets a much-needed ratings boost, thanks to a vivacious visit from Desperate Housewives heartthrob James Denton (tonight at 9 pm/ET). No, Wisteria Lane's studly Mike Delfino isn't coming to check Reba McEntire's plumbing. (Get your filthy minds out of the gutter, people!) However, Denton promises that viewers can look forward to plenty of above-the-neck action. "I play a marriage counselor hired by Barbra Jean (Melissa Peterman), who is married to Reba's ex-husband (Christopher Rich) on the show," he tells TV Guide Online. "The problem is that Barbra Jean develops a crush on the counselor, so obviously the therapy's not working too well! "Barbra Jean asks Reba to come with her to my office to fire me because she's too weak to do it alone," Denton continues with a chuckle. "Then, Reba and I hit it off, which causes problems between the women. Reba and I read more
