"Magic" Season 1, Episode 4

I want to make out with this show. I want chill with it, get to know it a little better, and then make like awkward eighth graders at summer camp. Seriously, what is it about this show that makes me laugh so much? Even my roommate, a fellow Reaper lover who sits self-shackled next to me on the couch every Tuesday night, throws me questioning stares because I chortle obnoxiously at the tube every 15 seconds. So yes, I'm a huge dork. And according to the CW's ratings breakdown, I'm also one of the total four women who watch this show. Yeah, take that... all other shows. Yeah. I think the show is really taking off. This time I found myself not so concerned for the vessel or what it would be, as much as how all the shenanigans were going to go down. Whereas I once watched with suspicion, I now watch for fun. And I think that says a lot about the leaps it's made. Sam is getting comfy with his hunting prowess, is accepting his fate, and is slowly growing a pair. That last one in particular makes me want to do a victory fist-pump in the air. And good for him. Sure, he's not yet firmly planted in Badassville, but from seeing the look on his face when he said to the devil, "I refuse to accept your power over me," he still looked like he was applauding himself on the inside. Sam Oliver: Real American Hero. Tonight we had ghoul Enrico Bellifiore, part-time magician, full-time perdition-drafter, back from the beyond and killing spectators who don't fully appreciate his magic acts. Ha. No, really. He's a magician who's not good with criticism. That's a stretch, I'm sure (Now, if only stand-up comics had that power...). Sam eventually captures him using this week's vessel: A white magic-act dove that ups the badass ante when it turns into a thousand smaller, more frightening birds and devours Mr. Magic, ironic modern-magician garb and all. Speaking of which: Thank you, Reaper writers, for taking a stab at today's holier-than-thou magic men. Not quite an Angel nor a Blaine, his nameplate belt and "guyliner" (thank you, Sock) nevertheless were to modern magic what spandex was to '80s hair metal - ironically awesome. Another Reason Why This Show Is Going to Single-handedly Make the CW cool: M. Ward's "Chinese Translation" (listen) played as the show faded out, and Andi tried to get Sam to go to a Flaming Lips concert all show long. If you haven't listened to these bands, I'd recommend giving them a try. Major cool points, CW. Though if I see Sam wearing an American Apparel hoodie next week, I might just have to go drown myself in the East River. I wonder does Sam really not realize that Andi likes him? After the whole ordeal she went through to get concert tickets and choosing just him to attend? Well, I guess there was that whole confounding part where she said he was "like her best friend" that made me gag a little. So I'm with the Devil - I'm hoping soon it'll be smooching time. And forgive me, but Sam's folks really are just terrible parents. He came to them with an important question about his soul and his past, only to be semi-ridiculed by his mom and blown off by his putt-putting dad. I am not feeling the love here. On to happy times. Parts That Keep Me Warm on Cold Nights: " Devil: "Oh, Sam. Life's too short to drink domestic [beer]." " Ben, on the bird: "I never had a dog, my dad is crazy allergic. This little guy fills that void." Sock: "You said I fill that void, Ben." " Sam sacrificing both his real life and his social life to save Andi. The devil, ironically, would be proud.
