Project Runway All Stars Recap: "Puttin' on the Glitz" Season 10, Episode 7

Project Runway All Stars is heading to the Great White Way! In this episode's challenge, the contestants must create a design for a character in Godspell who likes to flaunt her wealth. Yes, Conspicuous Consumption Couture. Not only will the winner get to see their designs treading the boards, but he/she will also get their bio in the playbill. The one twist: The ensemble must be comprised of separates because the character will be pulling the outfit together onstage.

This week's editing foreshadows that it might be Kara going home... or at least having a breakdown. Not only does Austin comment on how he loves her roller coaster of emotions, but Mila at one point mentions that buddies Kenley and Kara are so supportive of each other, if one were eliminated, the other would crumble. Even Mondo and Michael notice Kara's stress and give her a therapeutic hug.

The Runway:

Michael - The chartreuse flouncy skirt is beautifully made and stylish, but the print halter top is rather boring. Not sure what's going on with the jaunty, elaborate headdress, but this doesn't read wealthy to me, just tropical party girl, a chic Carmen Miranda.

Kenley - Costume-y and busy.  The bright red, brocade peplum coat trimmed with white fur over the turquoise and pink flower-print skirt fits the attention-seeking character, but isn't very chic. Also, I could have done without the sheer polka-dot top underneath. Enough with the polka dots! (FYI, she had my favorite statement of the week: "I don't make mediocre, half-ass pieces. I do every piece beautifully, with a wow factor. So it must be so annoying for those other designers." Yes, annoying because you're so good...)

Austin - It's an odd silhouette. Fitting black jersey catsuit underneath a metallic baggy jumper and fur stole overlaid looks like Desperately Seeking Susan-era Madonna gone Ren Faire/masquerade. I like it, but it's a little too quirky for this character.

Jerell - The sparkly, overtrimmed jacket looks like punk meets Jane Austin, but I don't understand why he paired it with a depressing gray skirt. He has some good ideas, but this is kind of ho-hum overall.

Kara - In the previous challenge, she got away with simple because her fashion face-off competitor Austin made something hideous, but I don't think she can slide this week. Joanna Coles told Kara to really be ambitious and this isn't it. Simple red pencil skirt and navy top are a snooze. The fur stole over it doesn't really make it that much more lavish. The giant silver bow shows some originality, but doesn't push it far enough. Amateurish.

Mondo - He was having trouble really committing to his look, but his 11th-hour tweaks seemed to have worked. The twist on the smoking jacket trimmed with a furry fringe is a bit Sgt. Pepper's, while the wild yellow and orange swirl-print maxi dress and layers of metallic fabric underneath are incredibly dramatic without feeling too matchy-matchy. It's fun.

Mila - I was liking the description but the execution falls short. White faux fur coat over a gold chevron-striped blouse and psychedelic, asymmetrical green and yellow wrap skirt? Did I wake up in Valley Girl?

Jerell is safe with his gray affair. The Top 3 are Michael, Mondo and Austin. The Bottom 3 are Kenley, Kara and Mila. A bad week to be a woman on this show!

Mondo wins, and poor Kara will be popping Xanax now that she's out. Stay strong, girl!

What did you think of the challenge? Did you agree with the judges?
