Project Runway All Stars Recap: "Patterning for Piggy" Season 10, Episode 3

Welcome back to Bizarro Project Runway (aka Project Runway All Stars). In this universe, the host speaks unaccented English, the mentor reminds you of your scary aunt and the judges are relatively toothless. We miss Heidi, Tim, Nina and Michael!

They've broken out the big star power for the challenge this episode: design a flamboyant cocktail-inspired red carpet dress for none other than Miss Piggy! This is the best challenge ever. Thankfully, all the designers are properly reverent, and I'm sure Oliver from last season is relieved he's not an All Star so he won't have to design for her ginormous hamhocks.

We're not really feeling the tension or drama this season yet, but the main issue in the work room this week appears to be over some hot pink, elbow-length gloves from the accessory wall. Eventually Mondo and Austin back down (but not without major eye-rolling and huffiness), and Kara scores the gloves. If Miss Piggy were there, she would have just karate-chopped her way into ownership.

The Runway Looks:

Michael Costello - Even though there's not another Michael this season, we still can't seem to separate him from his last name. We say yes to this dress. It's a short, darkly iridescent and glitzy number with just enough oomph for Miss Piggy. Especially digging on that top hat headpiece that we think dresses it up enough for the red carpet.

April - It's black and sorta Beetlejuice-y. Even the bow behind is pointy. It's cute, kind of Wednesday Addams: The Troubled Debutante Years, but the only thing that's Miss Piggy about it are perhaps the maribou feathers on the shoulders.

Jerrell - Ugh, she's attending a movie premiere, not slinging whiskey in a saloon.

Kara - The dark tweedy fabric is interesting, but the keyhole midriff is kind of odd for Piggy's silhouette (read: we like our pig belly crispy on a plate, not bulging through a dress!) What saves it is the pink piping that matches the pink gloves. Lucky she got those!

Kenley - This pink giraffe-print thing is so Kenley, and the pink tulle headpiece would work on Miss Piggy. Precious... but is it special event enough?

Anthony - This black dress with an A-line skirt has the purple feather detailing to give it that extra something, but it's not loud enough for the Piggy.

Rami - A white dress with pink and orange polka dots and ruffles above and below and even a pink fascinator. The judges seem to be enamored of this one, and I have to admit the flounciness is a good touch considering how much Piggy moves dramatically. But um, this is more like for a British wedding or the Kentucky Derby, no?

Mila - I adore this black, semi-shiny mod dress, but if you're going to design for Miss Piggy, at least vamp it up somehow! Make it in a rich metallic or add some girly accents? Where's the fun?

Gordana - Such a total miss on this uninspired but pretty pink nightdress thing. Really bad for Miss Piggy, who needs a defined waist.

Austin - Oh Austin, if ever a challenge were designed for you... what happened? I've got to admit I was incredibly disappointed, and you could see he wasn't owning his design all that much. Depressing gray and weird dark pink fabrics that seems severely put together. The absolute worst were those bows added to the waist though. Hello, unflattering? I think his original idea of molding the bows into the dress design for the bodice would have not only been more architecturally interesting, but less embarrassing for sure.

Mondo - This shiny pinky-orange mod dress with almost an Asian flair is cute with some nice styling, but not the knockout I expected from him.

After the strutting, Rami, Michael C. and Kenley have the highest scores, while Austin (sob), Gordana and Mila have the lowest scores. Finally, the judges and I are both on the same page: Gordana totally missed the mark, and Michael C.'s dress will see the red carpet!

Best Quotes:

Austin: "I feel in many ways we are kindred spirits. I like to pepper my conversation with French phrases the same way that Miss Piggy does. Sometimes I refer to myself as 'moi.'"

Anthony: "I was about to eat a piece of bacon this morning and I felt so convicted. I already feel bad about all of her children I've eaten in the past."

Austin: "You better not say that in front of her!"

Miss Piggy on Kenley's design: "I do love the hat though. After a big night on the town, I can just go home and use the hat to clean my pots and pans."

Did Michael C. deserve the win? Was Gordana's design the worst for this challenge? What would you have preferred to see on Miss Piggy?
