There were tears, tears and more tears on this week's
Project Runway. In the anticipated episode before the two part finale, emotions were flying high and people (namely Kenley) were being thrown under the bus. So who made it to Bryant Park fashion week? Well let's find out.
The episode began with Kenley still blaming Leanne for not "working the garment." And the 'tude was never-ending. Our favorite mentor Tim took the designers on a field trip and when they got off "the freeway" as Jerell mentioned (fyi we don't call them freeways in New York), they landed in the gorgeous Botanical Gardens. There they were met by Collier Strong, consulting makeup artist for L'Oreal Makeup. The task? To create an evening gown inspired by the nature surrounding them. Kind of a bummer that they re-purposed and recycled some previous challenges for the final week.
After the remaining four got back to the workroom they had thirty minutes to choose one photograph as inspiration. I have to say these prints were stunning. Kenley found the perfect fabric in Mood for her photo and Korto decided to take a risk and use lace, which she doesn't usually work with. Jerell explained that he lets the fabric inspire the design and perhaps being pretty much shirtless helps him too. Unfortunately for Kenley she's left her bag of tulle at Mood. Jerell, who has some of his own left over, refuses to help her out and Korto follows suit. But Kenley is relieved when Tim tells her she can go back and get it since she had already paid for it.
As Tim goes around the room emotions are varied. Korto is feeling a bit unsure about her garment while Kenley, as per usual, is extremely confident. Jerell's is looking a bit unfinished and Leanne tells Tim she's got a lot of work still to do. With stress levels at an all time high and the thought of Bryant Park closer than ever, the designers start to break down.
Time for the final runway show, here is my immediate reaction. Korto replicated her photo very well but from afar it seemed too simple. Leanne's pleating came out great and she certainly looked relieved as it went down the runway. Jerell's didn't seem too flattering especially in the bust and Kenley's fish scales weren't so attractive but I liked the top half. The guest judge, Marquesa designer Georgina Chapman liked Leanne's bodice and although Nina thought it was harmonious, she noticed a problem in the bustle. Michael felt Korto's was made beautifully but wasn't too sophisticated and Heidi thought it was pageant-like. Ironically Nina felt it was overdone but when it came down the runway I hadn't noticed any of the detail. Jerell's was well received, Nina felt it was youthful and Michael was intrigued. And then there was Kenley. She couldn't stop fighting with the judges and Heidi thought her attitude was annoying. It got even worse when Heidi asked them why each should move forward and who should come with. All the designers pretty much cried and the three musketeers all banned against Kenley. They all felt her work was one-note but interestingly, Kenley felt she should go to Fashion Week because she takes the most risks. She also chose Leanne and Jerell to join her as "classic doesn't put on a show."
In the end, Leanne and Jerell had the highest scores with Jerell winning yet again for his elegant with an edge design. But in a déjà vu moment, Heidi announced that all four would be returning for the finale, and like last season only three will be able to compete in the finale show. Jerell for one got jipped because any of the four are at risk to be eliminated upon their return to New York finale week. But for some reason I think he may be okay.
Do you think all four deserved to stay or do you feel like this week's ending was a copout?
