The Price Is Wrong

Here's a good laugh to start your Monday out on the right foot. In this clip from The Soup, no matter how hard she tried, this Price Is Right contestant couldn't grasp the whole concept of smart bidding (come on, everyone knows the "bid a dollar higher than the last person" trick!). But the worst part was watching every time she used her "strategic tactics" — she would be halfway up the stage before realizing she didn't win! read more

CBS Announces Price Is Right On, Shark Swims to New Night

Price Is Right Million Dollar Spectacular by Monty Brinton/CBS

The Price Is Right is so right with its ratings that CBS has ordered four more special eps of the series, to air in a Wednesday time slot (8 pm/ET) during May sweeps. Previous airings of the special edition, Price Is Right Million Dollar Spectacular — with Drew Carey hosting — has won its time slot, too, says the Reporter.CBS has also announced that Shark will return April 29, moving to Tuesdays at 9 pm/ET. The drama has four more episodes to wrap up from where it left off before the strike, although no word yet on whether it will get picked up for another season. While we're waiting, at least we've got a little price-guessing to do, and more of James Woods to flesh out spring TV. What's your hope for the series? — Anna Dimond read more

Drew Carey Defends Medical Marijuana

Drew Carey by Steve Granitz/WireImage.com

Looks like Drew Carey can add another job title to his growing repertoire: medical-marijuana spokesman. The host of The Price Is Right and Power of 10 can be seen in a video, released on the website Reason.tv on Thursday, arguing the benefits of accessible medical marijuana and voicing his opinions about the government’s role in controlling it.“I think it’s clear by now that the federal government needs to reclassify marijuana,” Carey says in the video. “People who need it should be able to get it, safely and easily.”Carey also visits an herbal pharmacy in Los Angeles, complete with a “deli-like” counter where customers can purchase many different forms of marijuana, including ice cream and brownies.“Smell that smell?” Carey asks the camera as he enters the shop. “Smells like freedom.”CBS had no comment about their star’s new endorsement. — Reporting by Rob Moynihan read more

Drew By Day; Comedy Tonight

Drew Carey host of The Price Is Right by Monty Brinton/CBS

Giggling at the antics of the slap-happy contestants who “come on down” at what he calls “the happiest place on Earth,” Drew Carey looks like he’s having a blast, and looks right at home, on the spiffed-up set of The Price Is Right as he takes over as host today. There’s no fuss and no ceremony, and outside of the introduction telling us we’re at the Bob Barker Studio in Television City, and that one of the games is still called “Barker’s Bargain Bar,” and that Carey chooses to sign off with the traditional plea to have your pets spayed, there’s no actual homage to the former host as the new Price era begins. And yet, probably the greatest tribute to Bob Barker is that the show goes on, and goes on effortlessly with its funny-looking new ringleader, who appears to be genuinely tickled at the breathless excitement of the frantic folks who come to play the game. When one of the contestants does a cartwheel after taking the stage, C... read more

Drew Carey: The Right Price Host

Drew Carey, The Price Is Right

Drew Carey has the cold sweats, but not because he's worried about replacing Bob Barker as the new host of The Price Is Right. The guy is sick — bad sick — and he's in his dressing room at CBS in Hollywood downing Theraflu and popping vitamins like mad. Carey really should go home, but there's no rest for the overemployed. Today he still needs to shoot two more episodes of Price, then grab a plane to New York City to tape his other CBS game show, the prime-time Power of 10. It doesn't help that he's also nursing a bum wrist, which he crushed in a much-reported mishap with a turntable door during an early Price rehearsal. When he makes his on-air debut Oct. 15 (check loc read more

Price Is Right Vet Claims She Was Wronged

Bob Barker by Cliff Lipson/CBS

Deborah Curling, who screened contestants for The Price Is Right for some 20 years, has sued Bob Barker and the show's producers, alleging they retaliated against her and forced her to vacate her post after she testified against Barker in a wrongful-termination suit filed by a former production assistant. An African-American, Curling also describes a hostile work environment where black employees and TPIR contestants were discriminated against. "Barker created an atmosphere of terror [where] any employee who complained... was fired," says papers cited by the AP.Curling's suit seeks an unspecified amount of damages/brand-new cars; a CBS rep declined to comment on the action. read more

Premise: 'Come on down!' Contestants guess retail values for prizes on TV's longest-running game show. Bob Barker racked up over a dozen hosting Emmys since CBS first aired the daytime staple in 1972, though it originated with Bill Cullen on NBC (1956-63) and ABC (1963-65). However, it was the genial, ageless Barker who really sold viewers on the show, which spawned several syndicated offshoots and a string of prime-time specials. When Barker retired in 2007, Drew Carey stepped in to ably fill his shoes.
