It's with a heavy heart that I lift my pen to write this recap. Joe Don has been set adrift, leaving Louie and Nessa behind at Pirates Court. The Triad is still in power and captain Azmyth grows more conniving with each passing day. Of course, this all makes for an entertaining episode that leaves you anticipating next week's show wondering: With Azmyth's biggest threat gone, who will he campaign against?
But first I have some questions because there are some things that I do not understand on this show. Why did the crew keep Louie, and more importantly, why did they cut their strongest teammate, Joe Don, loose? Why don't the crew members on the black crew throw their challenges to oust their leader? Does Azmyth come up with a list of chores on his own or is Cameron feeding him ideas. I mean, really, checking the hull for barnacles? Yes, of course, it's a legitimate concern, but did you see any? Me neither. Here's another question: Why did the producers cripple the potential for a mutiny by requiring the officers to agree to one?
I hunger for a mutiny, but I was also happy with tonight's great multipart challenge. Seriously, it had like five legs to it, and with no booby traps or sabotages, both crews were neck and neck for nearly the whole time. It looked for a moment as if the red crew might win, but again the well-fed, well-rested black crew won the $35K treasure, leaving JD, Louie and the gals to get drunk below deck and bemoan their fate.
Several people made a strong impression tonight: The desperate Kendra, who sold her vote to the Triad in exchange for a black-mark-free summons to Pirates Court. Nessa, who more or less called Azmyth a coward for putting up the strong players and for that farewell kiss with JD. Jupiter, who has become a total lackey who's willing to stick with the current captain for an extra coin in her pocket. And, of course, there's Jay, who with all his maneuvering has me wondering if he is setting Azmyth up for a fall. Riding along on the coattails of the captain is a great place to be if you let the crew believe that all the dastardly moves you make are actually the captain's doing. Jay has positioned himself to be the Teflon pirate with the most blood on his hands. When the time is right, I have no doubt he will jettison Captain Az to better his own position. The question is, will anybody see him coming?
So, what are your thoughts? Who is sad to see Joe Don go? Who's happy? Did anyone want to point out to JD after his "popularity doesn't win expeditions" declaration that apparently neither does he? Who is going to keep Kendra afloat now? And is the show really so complicated that we need a five-minute recap?
