American IdolFifties night was far kinder to the wannabes than Stevie Wonder night was last week. And the evening clearly belonged to Mandisa. Wow... just wow. A note to Paula Abdul: No woman wants to be compared to a horse. Paris thrived vocally on "Fever," but she's so young that the "vamp" thing didn't work so well for her. Premise: Donahue's groundbreaking, Emmy-winning talk show paved the way for many daytime hosts who followed, notably Oprah Winfrey, who said that he `really opened the door on this genre; if there hadn't been a Phil, there wouldn't have been a me.' Donahue had a (much-parodied) sensitive-male persona that made him especially popular with women. As he enthusiastically worked the crowd with a microphone he seemed born to wield, he made audience members and callers feel that their opinions truly mattered.
